A lot of interesting comments on the drawings. I think even with geeked out drawings and a design brief, people have pet peeves and interpretation of principles that they may not be willing to give up. Everyone also interpets the retro and certain design looks differently. I highly doubt voting would change because of it, but it would help with getting inside the designers head.

That's why design off #5 should be detailed drawings, with hand drawn neon, transformer size(clearly,it's a lot of footage to pull) side views, elevation, with schematics to prove it can be done in the real world

Gee, doesn't that sound fun?! Do all the contestants get to go pull permits for their submission and meet with insurance reps while they're at it?!

I love the talent in Signs 101! Three layouts really stand out to me, so it will be a tough choice to decide. It's interesting to see the diversity of all designers involved.

Great Job on the Layouts Everyone!

Good job Doyle, I figured there would be plenty of entries on such a nice project. I guess I lost track The finalist's for #5 Shovelhead, 3-D Sign Co. WeasleBogie and the winner of this one. If someone could refresh my memory that would be great. Brian Hardin giving the next assignment. .Anyway I'll post my playful excuse of a sign minus the neon. I'm having a good time anyway.

Actually, I am doing Design Off #6; as pointed out in this thread:

Bill DeBekker from 3rd Dimension Sign Co. is hosting #5.

My mistake,I saw somewhere where the 5 winners would be in #5 Thats the reason I suggested a tough assignment. This one was quite entertaining anyway.and tough to decide

Every entry has some great points. I was able to narrow the choices down to 3....... 6,7 & 8.

My choice is a slam dunk for #7. I would love to see an animated gif of that one.

Great effect (sales tool) #6. Also #6 matched the building with the red & chrome like pole covers..... BUT for overall design, colors of the era & architectural accents (with neon) #7, like I said is a slam dunk.

I don't think this needs to be any more labor intensive than it is now. Remember, this is JUST FUN. It's just a design contest, nothing more. It's nice to be able to have fun with an assignment without worrying about the details.

Have fun and don't think too hard.

how about on the design off # 11 you have all the past winners. then after that every 9th design off.have the winners of the past design off's. and the 10th person that won the top 10 winner's is the last spot. and rule is if you won a design off . you cant re-enter a new design off until after the top 10 winners design off. IDK think it would be cool

I think you'll run out of participants before that happens... some of us are getting into the busy season, with little time for design contests.

I wanted to give an honorable mention to #10. Before I had read down thru the thread (afterwards I see others had mentioned the same thing), I wanted to see how this would look as a twin face sign....hhmmm

But the biggest distraction is the changable copy cabinet.....that funky shape really takes away from the main sign.

I love your use of the open face neon...its perfect for this sign.

Just make the burger bigger! or remove it, but 10 in my opinion captured the time the best with the open neon.

I guess I was confused on how one would mount neon to a plastic face. The design is excellent, reminds me of the old Holiday Inn style

I considered the original concept was re working the specs of the sign pictured, which was backlit faces, no big deal,I love seeing all the creativity and 10 captures the era in my opinion. The animated Gif. shows skill, but both were practically re-built signs. I sure don't want to spoil the fun,but I know everyone is busy

The original spec. said nothing about keeping it backlit, only that the cabinet had to stay, elements could be added outside of the sign face but could not add more than 12 square feet to it. There was no mention of keeping it backlit so that leaves it open to a little interpretation. There are no budget constraints, if the original cabinet could be reinforced and a face or faces bladed out and neon letters added, then why not entertain it?

I stand corrected , Definitely entertain it. I'm sure 3-D can come up with a nice project. Really not my intention to sound confrontational over having fun although reading my comments may appear to be it's not intended

I think some people are taking this a little more serious than I did. This was just for fun and thats what I did, had fun...I don't think its necessary to get all technical with this.

Evey one is saying that my entry would not work if it was D/F. And you are all right....it would look like crap, but I really wasn't concerned with at that the time, i was just playin around. Now if I was getting paid the big bucks for the real deal.... I probably would have considered that....:)

I thought they all looked good and a few where sick! nice work everyone!
