Father teaches daughter a lesson about Facebook

I don't see how this was inappropriate. It was his property not hers. This wasn't her first offense as stated in the video she just got off being grounded previously for a similar offense.

He told her she could do what she wants if she pays for it. I am sorry my kids are not going to be ever allowed to post crap like that at my expense. I pay for it its mine and I get to control how you use it. Buy your own computer, pay for your own internet, buy your own house and do whatever the hell you want or say whatever you want. At that point you will have earned that right until then you have no rights only the freedoms I give you.

I agree. The gun stuff was a bit too much. To me, and this is just an opinion, it appears as though this father's overly aggressive behavior has rubbed of on his own kid, and now he's having to deal with it. Yeah what the daughter did was wrong and stupid. But it seems a bit hypocritical for him to be upset at her for going off on a rant on facebook but then do the exact same thing on a youtube video. Lead by example.

To destroy your own property and go tit for tat with a teenager seems a bit childish to me. As a child it would be harder to respect your parent after he displayed that type of behavior. I'm sure it felt good for him to get that off his chest, but he lost great chance at a good teaching moment for his child by acting just as immature as she was. At the end of the day this probably divided those two even more than they already were.

Maybe he did not intend for the video to become viral. If she has major issues, she probably won't post it on Facebook but she will probably find other ways to rebel. Some kids won't cower, she may see this in another way. 200+ kids saw her post, maybe 2 million will see his video.

Guaranteed she's on it anyway and has fifteen million ways to circumvent his wishes.

If this guy spent as much time caring about his daughter getting lung cancer from his smoking habit as he did caring about her use of ubiquitous socializing tools he'd be a better parent.

Restrictions on something as universal as Facebook never work, teaching behavior patterns which lead to smart decisions is much more effective.

Maybe I'm in the minority but pretty much everyone I was friends with grew up dialing into BBSs and hanging out on IRC once that came around, not much different than Facebook and it's ilk. Could you get into trouble that way? Sure, same way you could hanging out at a mall or where ever, it's the decisions that are important not the mediums.

i thought it was awesome and appropriate although i can see where the "city" folks on here wouldn't see it that way and think he should have taken her to the dr. phil show or something :ROFLMAO:

I found it entertaining and thats about all.

I suppose it goes to show that a gun can solve all your problems....
he might need to sleep with that one under his pillow.....

I don't have a problem with the fact he shot up the laptop. Maybe if he had taken her out to the yard and invited half her friends to witness it and do the same thing, or throw it in the river. The problem I have is that he posted it for the world to see. This is a private matter that shouldn't be shared with the world.

I'd say the girl sounds like shes got some pretty valid gripes and its pretty obvious she cant go to her father with them without him flipping a lid.

I mean, how dare she not like chores, and talk about it to her friends!

The more ruthless the despot, the more violent the rebellion. I'd say hes setting himself up for an early grandchild.

I'm not saying that children shouldnt have chores, or even be kept on a short leash at times, but in my eyes, this guy comes out looking like an immature, crying d**k

I know many parents that have done the civilized thing and reprimanded their kids with stern words, grounding, no allowances and other such things... kinda the new way of discipline for your children. For the most part it doesn't work. They just learn how to be sneaky and say yes ma'am... yes sir, I won't ever do that ever again, but go out and do it all over laughing their stupid little heads off. These kind of parents want to be friends with their kids and fit in and not look or sound like the mean old parents of yesteryear. Well, forget it. It generally doesn't work unless you have really strong parents which give such incredible role models to impersonate, they learn by example.

The kid was wrong and perhaps he didn't set a good example, but as long as any kid of any age or any friend is going to live under my roof.... it's my way or the highway.

If I'm paying the bills, I get to rule. Is that fair ?? I dunno, but it's my house and if ya don't like rule #1, get out quick and don' let the door hit ya on the way out. Does this mean I don't like you or love my kid or whatever ?? No, not at all. It's just about who's the leader and who's the follower. Wanna rule ?? Get your own crib and do as you please.

Again, in the country or the city around here, you can't just fire off 7 rounds... recklessly and not pay the consequences, but it was only done for effect.

How many of you condemning him for shooting this thing... hasn't thrown something or slammed something down on the ground when you've just reached your wits end ?? It's a whole lot better than straggling the kid or spanking her. When you reach the end of your rope, you need to release so you don't do something really stupid. Well, the gun part made it final. He killed her chance of using it. Do you think a hatchet or sledge hammer would've been more effective ?? Nope, not me. How 'bout tossing it into the pool or hiding it ?? Nope, this is the supreme silencer and rather convincing.

Maybe more people watching this might be alerted to what and how their kids are doing on these silly places and start finding out all kinds of things about their kids. Besides, they won't be invading their privacy if they blurb this stuff all over the internet.

It's time more parents start controlling their children, stopping the rude behavior they are developing and create more responsible young kids into becoming responsible young adults.

What would've really been neat, is if he had a bazooka and blown it to smithereens. Now that would've been cool.......... :cool1:

This dude is an idiot! I can see from the letter she wrote, he has it his way or the highway, If you think for one minute you can stand over someone with a gun and have them respect you, you are misinformed, Sure they will fear you, but not respect you! It's NOT the same thing! You should NEVER teach your kids to solve a problem (other than a violent attack or need to gather food) with a gun!

When your kids DO something wrong, (steal, cheat, lie, or destroy property) they need to suffer the consequences. But this letter was directed straight to her parents, who do not have any intention to listen to her at all! When you are dealing with teens, it is never a dictatorship, it is always a negotiation.

if you have an 8 year old it is a dictatorship, "they gotta do what you say because you control everything" but when you deal with teens your control stops the second they step out of your sight. Your job is to teach them to behave when you are not looking.

This guy shot her laptop because she expressed her opinion about HIM. so what does he think she thinks of him now? Kids need to know you have their back, not be someone who inflicts violent acts toward them. Somebody needs to be the adult in the household.

What did she learn? Don't express our opinion to a man, so when she gets married or dates, she is just supposed to suck it up and do what the man says and be happy about it???

By the way, Yes I believe in owning firearms.

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is allow people around you to tell you the truth, then you you adjust and grow. or politely disagree and move on.

And THIS type of parenting advice is why we have a society filled with 14-25 year olds who have absolutely no respect for anyone or anything other than themselves.

I just saw UCMJ22's post.....Seriously?

You do realize this isnt' an issue of whether she likes or doesn't like her chores, right? I don't expect my kids to like their chores. I sure don't like mine!!! But they still need to be done, and you do them. What you DON'T do, is go run your mouth and totally disrespect your parents in the process. That is what you DON'T do.

The kid was wrong and perhaps he didn't set a good example, [/INDENT]

I'm not really wanting to get in to an argument about this, but, I'm not really seeing what she did wrong. hurt her dads feelings/pride? I've got news for him, when he grows up, he's gonna have to deal a lot of people that think hes a pompous blowhard, so he might as well get used to it.

I would have a lot less problems with this if the video opened with the dad at a firing range, that didn't have vehicles passing in the background, and simply said.

"this is what happens when you abuse your technology privileges BANG BANG BANG.........BANGBANGBANG...BANG BANG.......BANG. P.S. Youre grounded"

but him sitting there whining about how she cursed 3 times, and doesn't like doing chores for a minute and a half made him look like a douche, no matter how cool his 1911 .45 is.

I just want to say, as a parent / step parent of 8 kids - NO ONE is a parenting expert - Dr. Phil? LAUGHABLE ... how to books? Puhlease! EVERY child is different, thereby every parent must adapt in how they raise them - There is NO right answer, just many variations of best/worst case of trying to get it right. I may not agree with EVERYTHING this guy did, but I KNOW humiliation in moderation can work - did she not humiliate & disrespect them (parents) first, even though they were unaware (her fb friends all knew). Good for him - sometimes a necessary, but effective, evil.

JUST my opinion ...

OK lets over analyze this some more with the facts:

She just got in trouble for something similar
She made this letter public
She disrespected basically the entire family
She blocked her parents from seeing it
She cursed multiple times (enough for a beating from my Dad when I was a kid)
She said we have a cleaning lady her name is Linda (Stepmom perhaps?)
Here is the Kicker "when you get old and need your @$$ wiped I won't be there" That would be a tough one to hold off giving a slap to the face even for me.

Maybe this was the extreme. Who knows maybe it was even fake? But for some of you to take her side or blow it off by saying it is no big deal what she said is sad very very sad

:goodpost:

Like I said - it is an issue of RESPECT. You RESPECT the people who provide everything you have. Period. If you don't want to RESPECT them, then don't expect them to PROVIDE it. It is just that simple.

Teenageers are NOT little adults. They are CHILDREN. They will be treated like CHILDREN until they stop acting like CHILDREN. This kid acted like a spoiled rotten child who had a bur under her saddle. And she did it publicly and in a way that had intent to both harm/embarrass her parents AND to show off to her friends how much of a "badass" she is.

ummmmm.... and???

I'm sure you cursed more than 3 times behind you fathers back too

She said we have a cleaning lady her name is Linda (Stepmom perhaps?)
While we're making assumptions, lets assume that her stepmom is a raging demonic B**CH

Here is the Kicker "when you get old and need your @$$ wiped I won't be there" That would be a tough one to hold off giving a slap to the face even for me.
yeeaahhhhh, Slap her... that will teach her to stop using her words.

All I am saying is that her actions are not even close to the brink of abnormal teenage behavior, however his actions are, as I see it, abnormal Adult behavior.

Kids are stupid... heck people are stupid. They post letters, photos, videos of themselves on Facebook and Youtube. People rob or beat someone up and post it online. They drive 120 on a freeway and post it. They take pics of themselves naked and send it to their boyfriend/girlfriend. Some assume almost no one will see it, while others hope everyone will so they can show off. Voyeuristic society

When I was growing up I couldn't see hardcore porn freely. I couldn't find graphic videos of people blowing off someone's head or chopping off limbs. Or photos of dead/decapitated innocent people. No girls and cups. There was no way for a pedofile or rapist to contact me in my own home. I couldn't be cursed at or degraded on a daily basis from nameless or faceless individuals. If my enemies wanted to make fun of me, bully me or call me names and spread lies they couldn't do it from the luxury of their keyboard.

The internet is still in it's infancy and very dangerous if not monitored
