  1. Question 3M IJ180mC-10 Aggressive

Yup, 3M is very aggressive - we print with eco solvent. We too have almost gotten totally away from 3M and have been using Avery 1105 now the past 3+ years. Much easier to work with, our installers prefer it and its cheaper than 3M, so its a win-win.
  2. Vinyl cutter recommendations

Another happy Summa owner here. Have owned our D140 for about 5+ years now, cuts nearly every day - in fact, have to cut an entire roll of 30" x 150' high performance oracal today, most of that being 6" x 120" stripes and I never worry about it not doing a good job. Money well spent, and I...
  3. Keencut substrate cutter

Cutter is sold - thanks Matt!
  4. Need Help! Mutoh 1304

Agree with Khan, most likely encoder strip is dirty or scratched and thus why it keeps happening in the same spot.
  5. Joe Pribish.. Old Paint

OP was one of the first "characters" I became familiar with on this forum. Seemed like he always had a way of putting things that made me smile. Sad to hear this news today...I wish him and his family peace.
  6. Need Help Code Violation: Can't park my commercial vehicle at my own house?!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the city/township/village probably got a complaint from one of your neighbors due to the "aggressive" design. They don't like it, and probably feel its an eyesore to their tidy little neighborhood. That is likely the only reason they have...
  7. Question CWT Laminator Maintenance?

We have a 1-year old CWT 1640, haven't noticed anything binding yet, but I would guess maybe checking the bearings on the underside to make sure they are clean and lubed would be where I would start first. Then maybe look at the bearings on the roller itself? Also, don't hesitate to call CWT -...
  8. Question Fact or Myth? Printers don't make money unless you run them a lot.

Agree wholeheartedly with you Gino - more is better, but for someone small or who is starting out $3-5k would be enough to justify having one for most people trying to get their feet off the ground. And please note I am strictly talking about money made by printing only, not installation...
  9. Question Fact or Myth? Printers don't make money unless you run them a lot.

My point was not necessarily what size shop they are, or even how much they do - more to suggest that is what we figured you need to be doing at minimum to "break even" to justify buying a printer such as those I listed. Realize not everyone in this business is a "printer" - I have several...
  10. Question Fact or Myth? Printers don't make money unless you run them a lot.

Agree with Joe, and for even more clarification you have to know what type of inks and printers you are dealing with before making a blanket statement. The printer your boss has that is 10 years old is most likely a solvent machine. Older solvent printers used full solvent or mild solvent inks...
  11. Discussion Perks to Owning Your Own Shop

To be fair, I think you have to include the top 3 negatives if you are going to fairly assess what it is to be an owner.. Benefits; I work for myself, I can set my own schedule (We don't work weekends), I make the rules here. Negatives; I work 60+ hours a week instead of 40, it seems the...
  12. Question How do you cut round corners?

The Lassco will cut .040 aluminum, .063 with some difficulty and will also cut most 3mm poly-metals.
  13. Discussion Average pay

Well, I don't believe thats entirely accurate - or a 100% truthful statement as I've been on both sides of the coin. It is true that as an independent installer you can make more money working for yourself IF you are really good at what you do AND have enough contacts to keep you busy year...
  14. Opinions on GFP 563TH ?

I looked at the Kala, looks very nice, but I its nearly $5k more than the GFP and not in our budget.
  15. Opinions on GFP 563TH ?

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a new laminator and pretty sure we're going to go with the GFP 563TH, just waiting on some final pricing... Anyway, just wanted to ask if anyone here has one and what your thoughts are? They look very well made and beefy. Also, the rear take-up should be a...
  16. Jet best vs Bordeaux

Many may know I've been using Jetbest for over 5 years in our Mutohs once I decided to move away from OEM. I've never had a problem with their inks. I briefly changed over to STS end of last year but had to switch back to Jetbest after a few months due to slow drying and issues with certain...
  17. Need Help Lamex Overlam for Wrap?

My thoughts exactly. We've used the cast Lamex in the past on various wrap projects that required us to try to save a few bucks and all have held up well. My thinking is cast is cast...doesn't really matter if its 3M, Avery, Oracal or whoever - all cast laminates should hold up equally well as...
  18. Need Help Mutoh 1624 - SubTank Refill Not Filling up (bulk Ink System)

You can always try to unhook the magenta lines from the head and try to manually pull ink through using a syringe. Otherwise if you do a "little charge" that should draw ink in unless you have an air leak, blockage or clog somewhere.
  19. Last minute change on frosted install has me panicked - please advise!

Billct2 is absolutely correct on all counts. Specs and difficulty have changed, so therefore price should go up. Also, I agree cutting at the seams will allow you better control over the job - no way I'd risk trying to do that in 1 piece, even with wet apply.
