  1. Am I being greedy??

Yes, a 35% margin (54% markup) sounds more sensible than the 35% markup (26% margin) you indicated earlier.
  2. How to deal with illustrator masks in Signlab

If this is an issue you're dealing with often, maybe you should be using Illustrator? If Signlab is adding clipping masks to AI files, it's because it doesn't actually support the AI format. AI files usually have a PDF copy of the artwork embedded in them, which is what Signlab is reading. It's...
  3. Am I being greedy??

I'd say 30% markup (23% margin) is an absolute minimum when you're dealing with a job that's straightforward and simple, with a vendor you know and trust. Anything else has more risk involved and should be between 50–100% markup (33–50% margin). The more complexity a job has, the more the costs...
  4. Need Help LS Engine - FONT ID

Looks like Eurostile to me (except the LS).
  5. Need Help SVG files from WEB solving problem with CutContour spot color

Hire a developer to build a custom tool for this. It doesn't sound that difficult to figure out. Put the cutting paths into a separate layer in the SVG file or add an attribute to distinguish them. Then build a Python tool to parse the SVG, separate the cutting paths, and then convert to PDF...
  6. "Strecth the type to make it look better"

I'm well aware of the lawsuit and had mixed feelings about even watching the documentary, but it was pretty interesting. As expected, they only briefly mentioned Tobias and I don't think the lawsuit or the breakup were mentioned at all.
  7. Any suggestions for protecting a large tv monitor?

I don't think any kind of matte or anti-glare sheet is going to work for this. They tend to have a frosted glass effect unless they're really thin and sandwiched right up against the graphics. Move the graphics back a little and it all goes blurry.
  8. Recognize the font?

Why do people always post incorrect guesses after it's already been identified?
  9. "Strecth the type to make it look better"

I don't think this is accurate at all, but Gerber does seem to get left out of the design history books, so who knows? If anyone can find documented history of Gerber I'd love to read it. If 400 hours sounds like a lot of time to spend on a font, you'd be stunned by the reality of it. A font...
  10. LAB color chart

That's an interesting question. What would a LAB chart be useful for? It would have a ton of colours that are out of gamut for your printer, and none of them would likely be an accurate representation of a given LAB colour.
  11. Question What kind of adhesive vinyl for foamcore mounting

Depends what kind of printer you have. If it's solvent like ours, we use thicker vinyls like Avery's wall film to apply on foamcore/coroplast. If you have heavy ink coverage, regular calendered vinyl can be difficult to apply through the laminator without rippling.
  12. How to deal with email attachments which get embeded and no attachment

This is a problem that's inherent to how email works, with a stupidly solution, which is to educate people that attachments are included when you FORWARD, but not when you REPLY.
  13. What the #$&% is up with new notebook computers in 2019?

A small, lightweight laptop with a long battery life is actually really nice to have if you're working at home and you don't want to be chained to the desk. I never thought either were that big of a deal and I used to buy beastly Windows laptops, but I never bothered to take it away from my desk...
  14. Alternative to Gemini for dimensional letters?

Overall, Gemini is one of my favourite vendors, but they aren't perfect. The biggest issues we have are that quotes often take several days, and it also often takes several days after placing an order before we get an order confirmation and a proof. But we've gotten used to it and we tell our...
  15. This please

The smaller text around the circle looks like Trajan to me. The SJF letters look like some sort of flare serif font.
  16. Fire Truck Font

The original typeface is City, released by Berthold in 1930. Digital version by Berthold: https://www.bertholdtypes.com/font/city/standard/ Digital version by Bitstream: https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/square-slabserif-711/ Digital version by SoftMaker...
  17. Suggested dpi for non-vector image

PPI is the resolution of the image file before your RIP processes it. DPI is the resolution of the ink dots your printer outputs. Two completely different things. A common scenario for a large printed sign might be a 150 ppi image, printed at 720 dpi. Also, note some software incorrectly...
  18. Font Help Help with font

Umm, could you show us all the letters you have instead of just one?
  19. CNC or Laser?

If you want to "grow into it", it probably makes sense for your first CNC to be a traditional one. Then, when you eventually outgrow it, add a laser and/or waterjet. Unless you need particular capabilities that a laser might be better for, like wood burning.
  20. Is cut lettering dying?

Museums and art galleries will never stop using paragraphs of cut vinyl unless a better process comes along that allows them to put lettering on a wall without a "background". Being able to place lettering without a background is essential to exhibition design.
