Very sad news. Didn't know him other than from on Signs 101, but anytime someone is lost from here it feels like losing a member of the family. My prayers will be for his wife and family.

I still prefer to use MDO in situations where I am mounting in between two posts. We slightly round the edges and fill any holes with wood filler. We then prime with XIM or Jay Cookes and paint two coats of Ronan Paint.

I use Brightline calendered for short term stuff, and have had good success. I have also use the Brightline translucent and have some 3+ year old sign faces that still look great. Key banner is good stuff to.

I tend to use more MDO vs Lusterboard, but I have used it a few times with no know failures that I know of. I love composite material to but wood materials are still the most rigid type of material to use. Overall though, I agree with Jill, I tell people that any wood product should look good...
