I'm certainly not giving anyone legal advice or supporting the idea of taking an unpaid-for-sign back... but I think the reason why (in most cases) it's unlikely that a someone contact the authorities when a sign maker repos a sign... the reason why so many other sign makers have gotten away...

Oh also... something to consider: Where's it being installed? What's the surroundings like. That might play a huge role on what decision you should make. If the buildings nearby or the fence looks brand new, a distressed sign may not fit... or visa-versa.

The material I plan on working with is not very forgiving, so I need to get those angles and curves just right, especially around the bumper. You can't quite get that with a bad wrap template. What I really need is a stripe template. I have one for an 05-09 mustang and the most recent Camaros...
