  2. Question 300ppi for a 10' x 8' backdrop???

That's your perfectionist brain lying to you. It's not an oxymoron. Lossy compression doesn't lower the resolution, and if you manage your compression settings, you won't normally see a difference in the print. Using JPEG files for production is a standard, common practice in printing. It's...
  3. 'Flatten Transparency' creating blocked out areas in illustrator.

A faster way would be to just rasterize everything but your cut lines in Illustrator (Object > Rasterize) and then save to PDF. No need to go to Photoshop and then back to Illustrator.
  4. Question 300ppi for a 10' x 8' backdrop???

Here's the formula we use. 600 / viewing distance (ft) = recommended resolution (ppi)
  5. Vinyl / Laminate combo for outdoor signs

Yes, I'm aware that high performance calendered = intermediate. OP asked for an economical option that will last as long as possible. In reality, 3-5 years is the minimum that we expect from intermediate vinyl, but to cover ourselves we don't promise any more than that. We haven't actually seen...
  6. Vinyl / Laminate combo for outdoor signs

Limited budget, last as long as possible - we would usually go with high-performance calendered and matching laminate. Avery 2923 vinyl and 2080 laminate is our go-to and we usually get 3-5 years without a problem, and our climate probably somewhat similar to yours.
  7. What would you guys charge for this install?

So quote them a price that you'd be happy with for 1, and then the price you would charge for 10.
  8. Font ID. Please Help!!!

Looks like stretched Clarendon to me. Hard to say exactly which revival of Clarendon it is. MyFonts has a bunch of them. The only way to know for sure might be to screenshot from MyFonts, paste onto your photo, and scale to see if the letters match perfectly.
  9. Avery Calendered

Always cast on vehicles here. A rare exception would be if it's for some sort of temporary use.

  12. Any illustrator plugins for paneling?

We usually do paneling in our RIP, but it's not hard to do in Illustrator. You can pretty much automate it by just creating a new document with multiple artboards and no space between them.
  13. Need Help Font ID

Open it in Photoshop and press Cmd+5 (Ctrl+3 in Windows). Magic!
  14. Font ID, please

You don't feel like tracing a glyph that can be done with 7 anchor points?
  15. output color wrong

The reason designers are always advised to use CMYK is because most print shops and sign shops do not have a colour management system, and CMYK therefore is a bit more predictable than RGB. A worthy tradeoff for a smaller gamut if you aren't contracting the job to a high-end commercial printer...
  16. output color wrong

And you blame that on the software tools? Are you kidding? Illustrator and Photoshop are not the easiest things to learn, but it sounds like your local college is graduating incompetent design students. Sadly, this isn't an uncommon problem. No graphic design student should be able to graduate...
  17. Vinyl specific software?

We use Illustrator to set up cutting files and run our plotter. Merging/welding paths is very simple, as is adding weeding lines between lines of text. Our Graphtec plugin to cut directly from Illustrator does some of those things, too, but we don't generally use it for that.
  18. Artwork permissions

In our experience, it's very rare for a client to have any problem with us displaying their signs in our portfolio, and we don't ask for permission. If they don't want you to display it, they'll tell you, either before or after the fact. It's very unlikely that someone would try to sue their...

  20. Question Best Representation of Clear Glass in Proof Drawings (or tinted glass)

The dark grey represents the relatively dark colour of most windows as viewed from the exterior in daylight, and the gradient visually references the glare and/or reflections on the glass. It works well because if you put white or black lettering on the drawing, it gives a relatively accurate...
