  1. Computer: always on or shut down each day?

We shut down every day. 3 of the 4 are too old to keep on, one overheats if left on.
  2. Salary vs. Hourly

When you mention salary/hourly, here in The People's Republic of California all workers are hourly unless they meet very strict specifications for salary. Hourly gets breaks every 2 hours, overtime after 8 hours and so on.

New customer = 100% non refundable deposit up front Established customer (open to interpretation) = 50% deposit up front No deposit, no work. It is called qualifying the lead.
  4. How do you advertise or what do u put in front of your shop to attract?

We use google adwords on a local basis at under $200/month. We also have a lot of word of mouth from our customers. We are in a downtown area and we do a lot of events down here so a lot of foot traffic. Location really helps.
  5. I love customers artwork!

We almost always get an upsell on these to rhinestones or some other bling for the adult shirts for the women. Good job on working with them. Sometimes a little education goes a long way.

  8. Question about heat presses

We have both a stahls hotronix and a dk, both are 20 inch swingers. The stahls wins hands down. Really though, any of the $800 or so presses will be good. Consider one with an auto-release. It will save you burning a few shirts.
  9. Wholesale shirts

Cotton prices went from about 40c a pound to over $2 at one point. It has come back down but the prices are still higher than 2 years ago. A combination of a bad economy, bad forecasting by the mills, a major earthquake in Haiti that shut one mill down and hording by the growers sent prices...
  10. What would you do?

For anything that size we have a contract that clearly states the terms and the proofing process. We don't do anything without a deposit though. Just a lesson learned a long while back. Deposits help qualify the lead.
  11. continued computer crashing and solution

Well taking an hour to drive over there, get it, and come back or spending that hour making money leads us to have things shipped, even if they are close by. In the end I got a nice dinner out of it so I am pretty happy right now.
  12. continued computer crashing and solution

Our fastest computer blue screened and then wouldn't start back up. It looked like the hard drive had failed. It has 2 HD's in it so I figured I would swap them out and reinstall windows for the 3rd time in a couple of months. So I swap it out, put the master/slave jumper from one to the...
  13. incentive programs

Work or get fired seems to work for us. In reality though, I would offer a 10% spiff on the profit $ above a shop minimum. So if we said we wanted a 60% Gross margin on all orders and we had a $1000 order that would be a $600 Gross. So if the employee sold it at $1100 then he would get 10%...

Wings has different levels. We moved up to the pro level. But it is all the same program, just a different key to unlock the advanced stuff
  16. When is it time?

+1 on the $35k expense. You need to set some goals on what you want to get out of it and if it doesn't happen you need to either let him go or change your expectation.
  17. EMB Files?

We have Wilcom's EMB True Sizer. We use it for some adjustments on un-editable files.
  18. UPS leaves delivery notice on our door while we are open!

We are so close to ONT ( a UPS/FedEx/DHL hub) that I could throw a rock and hit them all in one shot. We are just too small for them to worry about us. I have to contact our vendors to complain.
  19. UPS leaves delivery notice on our door while we are open!

Our regular guy is on vacation. The sub left he note yesterday. Go figure. We have called dispatch in the past to get our deliveries. It is either a sub that didn't want to deal with traffic here or UPS optical software that reads our address wrong and puts the box on the wrong truck. Most...
  20. UPS leaves delivery notice on our door while we are open!

We almost always have the front door open during business hours but it has been so hot here we have kept it closed the last few days. So we are open with the lights on, our sandwich board is on the sidewalk, our open sign is out and guess what. The UPS guy just leaves a notice like we were...
