good idea. the lettering doesn't have to be from scratch, just a well modified font. it is one of my favorite ways to design a logo. cmyk is way over used and mostly only understood by people in the business. the version you had with the black and burgundy isn't a bad place to start.

some times a design doesn't suck enough to totally throw out and can't be saved by just tweaking it some. the customer didn't ask for a total redesign and considered what they had was good to go. it only takes a minute to tweak out a design and suggest that to the customer.

yes, aluminum frame. make it with 1" x 1". if you haven't used it before, there are corner connections and "T" connections so that you can build the frame with cross bars for support where the pieces butt together and between the sheets of dibond for extra support

I would say frame as there would be a ton of screws in the faces. I don't do 90 degree bends on dibond but it may be possible and if so, I'd attach the edges to the internal frame work so I could cut down on the screws thru the face.
