  1. UltraFlexx 13oz getting thinner?

You don't need a very sensitive scale if you learn some basic math and weigh the whole roll :Big Laugh
  2. Illustrator vs. Gimp

To clarify, since I seem to have cause a bit of controversy: I learned Flexi first because it's what my predecessor used, then I taught myself Illustrator because it felt easier to use on the few occasions I tried it. It was also much better at handling the files customers would give us...
  3. Illustrator vs. Gimp

Pro tip: pros use Illustrator. It's the de facto standard because it's powerful and efficient. Flexi may suffice if you're a small shop that doesn't do much design/layouts or if you mainly do cut vinyl.
  4. Print Profile Books

Print a swatch sheet from your RIP - i.e. in Versaworks there's 3-4 different kinds you can print, although they're all on one big sheet, not pages. Google "cmyk colour chart" or "cmyk swatch sheet" etc. and find one that suits your needs, or modify one. I'm guessing you're not getting the...
  5. Why doesent the plastic effect in corel Photo paint work on black?

If the effect has a blending mode setting then yes, try changing it from "multiply" to "screen" for the opposite effect (lightening instead of darkening).
  6. Why doesent the plastic effect in corel Photo paint work on black?

Some of those type of effects in Corel or Photoshop work by adding shading only to your image. If you just add shading and not highlights to black, you're not going to get much of an effect. Depending on the result you want to achieve, you can sometimes get the effect you want by lightening the...
  7. Town wants me to pay permitting fee to put their own sign on their property.

Sometimes it's just a matter of finding the right bonehead to speak to. That said, most of the city planning people in our municipalities are quite friendly and helpful. Most of them seem to take pride in helping small businesses grow in their district.
  8. ICC Nightmare

A few tips for Roland: The correct Pantone palette to use in Illustrator is usually going to be Solid Coated. Set your default colour management preset to "Sign&Display". Versaworks will do a decent job for most Pantone colours, as long as you're using the correct profile for the media. Try the...
  9. Retractable banner stands and material

Polyester film is usually the best type of material for this. We use POS Pro 200+, but we're testing a generic brand that's half the price and seems to work almost as well. 33x77 is the most common size (may vary by an inch or two depending on your supplier).
  10. Photoshop files... Who else hates 'em?

Ask the customer for a new file, or tell them how much it will cost for you to fix it. Simple. In this case when it's just the proportions, I usually explain to the customer that I can fix it, but if their designer is available, they can probably fix it faster, since the file is quite complex...
  11. Ghost Like black on edges

I had one material several weeks ago that was doing this. I tried all sorts of things to reduce the static, to no avail, when suddenly I realised I had the print head up the whole time. I lowered it and the overspray was gone on the next test print.
  12. Onyx 10 can't open network files because of long filenames

I can't explain why the file sometimes works and then later it doesn't, but you haven't given us any examples to show whether your filenames are in fact 128 characters long or not. Note that errors like this often are referring to the total length including the directory path.
  13. Another thing besides 4' flames that burns my butt...............................

Buy some of these, or make 'em yourself. http://www.image1impact.com/core-id-cards
  14. Etched Aluminum-Safety Orange

Maybe this? Just from a quick Google search. http://www.engraverssolutions.com/PDFs/tips&tricks-color_filling.pdf
  15. Double strike printing for backlit white acrylic faces?

You will, eventually. Double-striking affects certain colours more than others. Yellow will just get more yellow, black will just get more black, but on the other hand, pink will turn RED, orange may turn BROWN and you could have all sorts of unpredictable problems with pastel colours. Most...
  16. Averege $/hr for wrapper in the US

You still have to subtract your operating costs and wages of the employee that is printing the wraps while the other one does installs. But still that would leave at least $1k per vehicle.
  17. Need Ecosolvent printable FABRIC BANNER / polyester

Signmax Mirror Image Flag & Banner material from WRI Supply in Kelowna, BC. We use this stuff occasionally and it's the most "organic" feeling fabric I've found that prints on eco-sol. It comes with a liner for printing of course. Great for flags or banners that need to be folded up for storage...
  18. Font ID please

I'm betting on this being hand drawn by the logo designer. What I would suggest you do is draw the first letter of her name in the same style, then put her full first name in the centre, in a blocky slab serif font like the Hutto Hippos logo (Hippo optional). If you post the logo with the word...
  19. Anti Vandalism Material

If your test fails, you could try a hi-tack vinyl.
  20. Clear aluminum sandwich

What is the purpose of the aluminum? Is the idea to have an opaque graphic on the front but the sides edgelit? If that is in fact what your customer wants, couldn't you just put opaque graphics on plexi/polycarb?
