  2. Opinion Lamination roll size

I run bogus paper for a backer. Allows me to run all kinds of odd sizes. No issues to speak of. YMMV However, I can see the convenience factor of having the laminate narrower than the substrate on certain jobs.

  4. Reflection Print

Thermal would be too small. Lettering without the shadow is 25" tall x 50" wide.(so far) I haven't gotten the final dimensions.
  5. Reflection Print

Hi Bubba, My thought was to mimic the look of a true shadow where the vehicle color is a component. Shadow would be a black to transparent gradient. At bare minimum would need to print on the shadow clear to have a chance at making it look good.
  6. Reflection Print

Calling all digital print wizards, I'm wondering if this type of print is possible, and will look good, if done on clear? White flood coat then print. The hard part would be getting the gradient in the reflection to look good. Client really wants a reflection, and it's the only thing I can...
  7. Shop truck critique

pew... Just kidding. As far as branding you should remain consistent. That's one of the cornerstones of branding. Color changes, logo changes, etc... can make existing and potential customers question if it's the same business. If you started with red stay with red. Layouts look...
  8. Turnbuckle failure after 7 months.

Clevis style is the best. It is how you hook cable or chain to any type of load. The only eye-bolts I ever used for lifting were forged and made expressly for that purpose. Note: The problem with eye-bolts, even forged pieces, is they are sensitive to the angle the chain or cable is pulling...
  9. Building your own laminating table?

What about buying a new sheet of glass? Years ago I worked with large sheets of soda-lime glass. It was used as the platen of flexographic plate making equipment, and could be leveled perfectly flat. Of course the glass was ground ultra flat before we got it. We used a custom bank of dial...

  11. Loading tips?

I always wear cotton gloves when loading material. After I load my SP540V, and before I lower the pinch rollers I do the following steps. 1) Grab the tail of the vinyl in the middle using right hand. You only need about 18" over the platen to do this. 2) Bend down and place my left hand on the...
  12. WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY EDITION 1607..........and the additin of the pest CORTINA!!!

I agree with buying a rig that outstrips your current needs. Gives one room to grow while not falling short when tasked with large files.
  13. WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY EDITION 1607..........and the additin of the pest CORTINA!!!

One thing Win 10 does is use your computer and internet connection like a bit torrent to supply others with updates. Odd how no one mentioned that. You are paying for internet that Win 10 is using free of charge. This scheme also slows your internet connection. This was brought up in my...

  15. Anybody get something cool for Christmas? Non sign related!?

Got a Costco/Snap-On led work light and some Alpena LED pods for the F350. Took the better part of three days to fab the mounts and do the wiring for the Alpena LED's. Everything soldered, shrunk wrapped and loomed. Haven't had a chance to try the little retina burners yet. S'posed to be...
  16. Substrate Scrap Storage/Organization

Took two truckloads of "drops" to the dump. Been at this for over 25 years and I've learned one immutable fact. The scrap you save for that next job will NEVER be the correct size, color, etc... Only stuff I keep around is drops of foam-pvc, and only if they're bigger than 24" x 36".
  17. Any recommendations on vinyl that will stick on cotton or nylon?

Years ago we had good adhesion on wind surf sails with Arlon colored cast vinyl. Client kept coming back everytime he got a new rig, said ours was the only stuff that stayed put. Not sure if that helps or not. Could always try the 8000 series "super glue" Arlon.

  20. ways to evaluate profile accuracy?

What about printing PMS bridge swatches then using a densitometer to compare them against the Pantone bridge chart? Simple enough, and gives you another point of reference. I did this in one of my college courses.
