  1. Traditional, hand carved, ribbon sternboard

Nothing real fancy here. Hand carved and gilded HDU, 2" thick on the ends, about 48" long. Latex paints. I don't get a lot of call for these...once every couple of years. If there is an interest for a step x step, I took plenty of pics. :thankyou: Joe, Makin Chip$ and havin Fun!
  2. Little Bird

Thanks again! Bright gilds? Pay attention to the details. Glossy undercoat, wait for the right tack (don't use much size.....just a film) and I "burnish" (clean up creases and fill holidays) with a good size, red sabol brush.......sweeping left to right. This way, any scratches you leave...
  3. Artist or Not?

I try to be the best craftsman I can be......always working to improve my craft. I always thought that to be an artist, you first had to master the craft Artist? Me? I'll let others decide. Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!

  10. Little Birdie

I think the last time I used this motif on a sign was in 1981 for TV/Movie actor Robert Montgomery. He was big into collecting bird carvings.....mostly world championship work. This one is a little smaller.....5" dia. HDU. Here it is before paint. It's easier to "see" the carving before i...

  16. Dragon progress......

I finally got some time into this. Carvings, for me, tend to evolve. You do one thing, it changes everything around it. I change those things, etc, etc. The carving "evolves". A little more tweeking, add the scales and I'll start on the background.....that will go fast. Joe, Makin Chip$...
  17. "nuther HDU Hand carved sign done

That looks great.......posts en all! I just (personally) don't like white letters. Nothing wrong with it, just a little too stark for my personal taste. I'll tone it down a bit and go with ivory. Good lookin job!!!!! Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!

Just to add to what Jill said, turn the can upside down before removing the screw and replace it before turning the can upright. To get the paint to come out, squeeze the sides of the can. If you don't put the screw back before turning the can upright, you will get a skin on the paint from the...
