  1. If you were to move...

30 years ago, my wife (en 2 kids) and I could have moved anywhere in this country we wanted to. (We did spend 1 whole summer touring the country, coast to coast with mini trips to Colorado, Wyoming etc.) We moved to NW Connecticut on purpose...... That hasn't changed. Joe, Makin...

  4. Different enough?

Thanks everyone. Doug, 20lb HDU (Duna) Thanks Steve C. Wish I had you next door. I don't usually spend so much time on a sketch but dragons are not a usual subject for me so the input is great. Many of the points you made Steve, will be addressed when it's carved. (That IS the final...
  5. Different enough?

I used a basic pose for a dragon I found in a web search and made minor and major changes. I changed the shape of the head a bit and added small new elements. Re-designed the scales on the neck and added different wings and tail. What do you think??? It's going to be in a scene with a stone...

  10. Solid Siding Stain on HDU?

I'm planning to use the Cabot Solid 100% acrylic siding stain on HDU to match an existing sign system (which is made from wood). I'm thinking...."No Problem!" Has anyone tried this? Am I asking for trouble? Any and all advice is appreciated! :thankyou: Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!
  11. Mosh needs Help! In more ways than one....

Dan, Everything you said is true about the curing. I've had many discussions with Frank Manning and Kent Smith, (both are friends) over the years and I take precautions to prevent such mishaps.......I also do extensive testing of my own to verify (under my controlled conditions, in MY shop...
  12. Mosh needs Help! In more ways than one....

Dan, I know it isn't necessary to prime HDU when using laytex. I've tried it but just can't seem to get a smooth enough surface with the house paints.....the "dimples" do show for me.....especially on the carved surfaces. The primer I use can be sanded to mitigate that problem for me. That...
  13. Mosh needs Help! In more ways than one....

The "Real Sign Shop" in town uses the Mathews with great sucess.....but they have a spray booth and all the protections. Here's one that went on a cupola of a local town library that I carved and they finished with Mathews...It's been up there facing west for over 5 years.....it's like new! In...
  14. Hand Carved Fox....Step x Step

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I just got back from a trip to OR so I've been unable to get to answer those two questions........... 1st, on the painting question, I apply one primer coat and two top coats (all acrylic laytex). I only sand after the primer coat (220 grit). That's...
  15. Hand Carved Fox....Step x Step

Thanks everyone! I use the acrylic laytex on all my HDU projects. I really don't have a good handle yet on painting images with it...............I gotta get some lessons. The staining techniques that I am comfortable with (on wood) are similar to using watercolors.....layers of washes. BIG...
