  1. I did a ba-a-a-a-d thing...............................

There is a flea market 5 minutes down the road from us with a vinyl shop who does this sort of thing. I'm pretty sure you pay per letter or something like that, and I often these jobs to them.. Sometimes they really want us to do it, and so we do, but I always charge them similarly to how you...
  2. Mistakes in the workplace

I have a really hard time understanding business owners who would charge their employees for mistakes on a regular basis (not to mention the legality of it). Mistakes happen, if the same thing happens multiple times, than that employee should not be doing that job. If that means termination, so...
  3. Installation Conundrum.....................

I'd be inclined to hire an engineer. We avoid dangerous or ill-advised installs like the plague, but if one insists, I insist on using someone who knows more than I do about physics. Good luck!
  4. Facebook Freedom

Facebook is a great tool for social networking for our business. Last night I got a call from someone who told me the only reason he called us is because we "like" stuff that he posts to FB. Honestly, we don't typically like things on facebook, but we do a lot of instagramming every day. And my...
  5. Ditching cable TV

Like many of you, I dropped cable about 3 years ago and use my Sony BluRay with internet connectivity to watch Hulu Plus and Netflix. We've been meaning to get an antenna for local stuff, but we are just kinda lazy about it. I have my parent's login for HBO, every once in a while I'll watch a...
  6. Is there a way to clean this vector file up?

We would do the same thing... In Corel, you can convert the image to bitmap and then outline trace it OR we would just painstakingly redraw it. You can make use of the Transform tool (rotate option)... It actually might not be that hard to recreate if you are good at Corel.
  7. How to install a large piece of vinyl on lexan (polycarbonate) material?

We probably would be weary about plotting something that big in one run (not to mention the width may not all fit on one run of vinyl). We also tape by hand, and anything over 10 or 12 feet is pretty risky. So if we are going to break it up in sections anyway, why not just make the sections...
  8. Typo sandblasted sign - remove and replace wood with clay?

could you blast off the letter that is there, make the replacement letter out of the same wood but cut-out, and then stud mount it to the sign face? IDK, we've never encountered this problem.
  9. How to install a large piece of vinyl on lexan (polycarbonate) material?

We would break up the artwork into manageable pieces and include registration marks to align the pieces with minimal need for measuring. If you have a really hard time putting down big pieces of vinyl, you can always do it wet.... But we would have no problem installing this dry, it might be...
  10. 4' x 10' sign cabinets

I agree, I get what I get... but, having said about 50 times "I have no idea what i'm doing, I've never designed a channel letter sign, I'd appreciate any input, etc." They could have mentioned that tightening it up would look better. I was BEGGING for critique, and they just skirted it on its...
  11. 4' x 10' sign cabinets

I used them for my first ever channel letter job. I told the sales person I really had no idea what I was doing, and I needed a bit more hand-holding than the average customer. They ASSURED me I was in good hands, and they would help me out with any questions, etc. Well. Lets just say they...
  12. Gold leaf from Thailand

I think they will send you a few leafs as a sample if you are curious. Just call them. If I remember correctly, they sent me samples years ago. I don't have enough experience to tell you if its good or bad.
  13. Sign Shop Gremlins [Keeping track of tools?]

We are always looking for our 18" rulers and tape measures. I think we have 5 or 6 tape measures for 3 people, and we still are always looking in 5 spots for one. Our workbench is about 20 ft long and it has a shelf below most of it. Our tools, exactos, knives, squeegees, etc. live there, and...
  14. How Much Would You Charge for this wrap?

I completely agree. It looks like you did a great job, but its hard to give you an idea of what someone would charge without knowing how much of the job you actually did. That said, I could imagine this would be between $2,000 and $3,500 (the upper number is if you did all the artwork, found...
  15. Stock Image Subscriptions

We often use http://www.dollarphotoclub.com. I pre-purchased the 100 images, and it makes my life so much easier knowing I can find a great image (or vector) for only a buck.
  16. Cutting French cleats - Q's....

we can adjust the angle on our handheld jig saw. Just set up a fence and let 'er rip!
  17. WTF - Is this a custom font?

    thank you
  18. WTF - Is this a custom font?

the other part of their logo is another edited font, so I'm having a hard time coming up with this one assuming its not the original design.
  19. Can I laminate Stainless Steel to PVC?

I'm trying to keep the costs down. Also, their Gem Leaf product is only warrantied for interior applications. AND they take 4 days to get a quote back to me AND their turn around is very slow lately.
