  1. Falcon Jr photo printing problems

If 720 dpi is 'too grainy' then there's something wrong with your file. The human eye in most non-mutants is incapable of discerning one part in 120 or so. An image resolution higher than 150 ppi is a waste of time and can be counter productive, depending. Assuming that the original images...
  2. Sign post remover?

City boys. You all need to spend some time with your country cousins who all know that the sovereign remedy for this problem is a hi-lift jack [available at Harbor Freight or any farm supply house] and a couple of feet of chain. Just feed the chain through the hole conveniently provided in in...
  3. Attitudes & Reactions

Au contraire, John Donne was an idiot. Every man is an island. You come onto this planet alone and you sure as hell go out alone. On that journey, which is also made alone, the object is, or at least it ought to be, to cooperate with the rest of the planet on your own terms or not at all...
  4. Typeface questions?

Close, it's LHF Stanford, not Sofia. With a bit of horizontal stretch and a taste more slant.
  5. Attitudes & Reactions

My dear old granny used to say something like that. She'd say "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything." Apparently she had some Pollyanna in her. I told her one day, after hearing this bilge for the nth time, "Try dropping the word 'nice'. There, doesn't that play a...
  6. Printing past the edge?

It's not that you can't do it, rather it's a question of why would you want to? All you're going to do is build up a bunch of ink on the platen that's going to be first class mess. No one no how prints a full bleed this way.
  7. The Addams Family

A google image search found about 100,000 images for 'Charles Addams' and ~740,000 for 'Addams family'. There ought to be something in there you can file the serial numbers off of, so to speak.
  8. Banner patching

I've patched banners in exactly the way you described. from a couple of feet away the patch is well nigh invisible. One banner thus patched has been stretched between posts out in the open for over three years now and you absolutely cannot tell it's been patched.
  9. Performance Layout

A poor choice for a type face, especially all jammed together like you have done. The name is very difficult to make out and the web address is well nigh illegible. Regardless of your choice of type face, don't make a web address all upper case. Since web addresses are case insensitive, you...
  10. digital printers

Eh? All smaller jobs mean is smaller media. just because you have a 48" printer doesn't mean that you have to print 48". Repeat the phrase "Up to 48" until you become comfortable with the concept.
  11. I have another One

...and not one of them harmonious with the other two. Yet Another typographical train wreck both in type face selection and layout.
  12. Explain your avatar / name

The avatar is a picture of Mrs. Efiginia Doubtfire, friend, companion, protector, and practicing Komondor who sadly left us in January of this year. Hopefully we'll get another puppy but Efie's countenance will probably remain. Finding one can be a challenge, there's probably less than 50...
  13. Frank Frazetta, Fantasy Illustrator, Dies at 82

Frazetta, much like Jack Davis, founded an entire genre of illustration and an attendant army of imitators. His trademark pyramidal layouts and attention to unbelievably imaginative detail were incredible. He was one of my heroes.
  14. Logo and intro

Notwithstanding the record-breaking number of gratuitous effects and the sound typographical principle of never running copy downhill being given the finger, what does it say? It's illegible.
  15. Spin King...sign spinners

You cannot waive your right to pursue for negligence. No where, no how, not even the, shudder, south. A waiver isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
  16. Anybody recognize this dog-herding-sheep picture?

It's not that old, those look to be a pair of reasonably modern vehicles in the background. You should be able to use what you have. If you're worried about black helicopters and the copyright police rappelling down ropes into your home to clap you in irons and carry you off into the night...
  17. registration marks

Install each layer on site. Always and forever. Even if each layer lays completely on the layer below it, if you try to do it ahead of time there is a very real possibility of the base layer not going down properly. If there's overlap between layers it's a recipe for certain disaster. The...
  18. Wholesale printing, charging for waste?

They paid for a sign and that's what they get. How they get it is my concern, not theirs. The vast majority of waste goes to the dump. Life is too short to be constantly wrangling odd sized pieces of material. Your concept of right and my own seem to vary considerably. Actually, my lack of...
  19. registration marks

Registration marks, as in the traditional target variety and all of its variations, are a waste of time. If you want to register multiple layers of vinyl cut a rectangle that bounds all of the layers on the base vinyl. That would be the one you apply first. Then cut that same rectangle, or weed...
  20. Wholesale printing, charging for waste?

Here in this shop materials prices are calculated based on media unrolled, not necessarily used. If I have to cut a 4' line of 6" text, 5' of vinyl is charged. For, say, a 1'x10' banner, 11' of 36" banner material is charged. If the media is not something normally stocked, the client gets to...
