  1. My Process -- Any Feedback?

If you want to do them in house I'd suggest getting a Summa cutter. They are super fast and extremeley accurate. We run a 24" and haven't killed it yet. In the old days(before inkjet) we'd routinely load 50 yard rolls of material and go to dinner. It would just hammer away. Bad part was...
  2. My Process -- Any Feedback?

Sub out to a place that does labeling. Even if you don't need anything printed the laser cuts stupid fast.(nearly one meter per second) The waste gets stripped and the finished product gets rewound on a core.
  3. Versaworks question

If you really have to know get an accurate gram scale and weight the carts before then after. 1 gram is very very close to 1ml of ink.
  4. All About Magnets

While you can print on magnetic material IMO I wouldn't. Been there head struck that. We do the print, lam, apply method. The super thin fridge magnet material you can kinda get away with, but it still has it's issues. Contour cutting works okay on the fridge stuff. If I'm doing a set or two...
  5. Webbing Laminator....What's your method?

When I web up I used the tail of whatever I previously used to stick the new laminate to. I do however run sacrificial paper. Once the new laminate gets into the nip point I use a sled made from 3mm Sintra and nip on float pressure to straighten out any wrinkles. Works like a champ. No...
  6. Printer/plotter user opinions

Might want to check the classifieds here for used equipment. iIRC there are multiple HP Latex printers and one or two used Summa cutters. For a laminator I would look at USTech. A number of folks here have them and are quite pleased with how they work. They especially like the price. Could...
  7. Wft?

Cool. :thumb: I hope it helps a lot of people.
  8. Printing side of the sign industry

Find your local tech college and get a couple night classes. A tiny bit of effort will reap huge dividends for you. I know this for a fact because I did it. As far as software here is what I know. Do not get wrapped up in the Adobe vs. Corel vs Flexi vs whatever battle. And don't think you...
  9. No wet application for Reflective vinyl...why?

Big Squeegee with a handle. I could see doing all my panels with that. :thumb:
  10. Is it possible to do single pass cut of 3003 1/8" diamond plate aluminum handheld????

A troll? Really?! Just trying to help with my decades of experience, but that doesn't matter to guys like you. I find it ironic(and slightly amusing) how you claim to have been doing it for years yet come here looking for advice. Should have the system knocked by now dontcha think?
  11. Seeking Advice on Large Format Printers

I have the answer to: What is the best printer? Irrespective or brand it is the one that has a smart tech and parts ALWAYS able to get to your shop within a couple hours of failure. In lieu of that you need to have a local and ready supply of parts should the need arise and you end up doing...
  12. Seeking Advice on Large Format Printers

At $500-$1500 a month I'd keep outsourcing. There is a lot more to running a printer that you don't hear about. Ink, materials, maintenance, breakdowns, service calls, employee training, RIPs etc... We outsource a number of things because my sub can do it faster, on the same materials and...
  13. Is it possible to do single pass cut of 3003 1/8" diamond plate aluminum handheld????

Why are you so easily offended? You came here looking for ideas and I told you what I do. Yes you are using the wrong tools in an unsafe manner. I will stand by that statement. Truth is I don't care now the old timers did it. There are better, safer, more accurate ways of doing things...
  14. Non-laminated vinyl application problem

We use a Big Squeegee to install unlaminated 4mil prints to flat panels. No issues save for a slight amount of stretch.(less than 3mm over 1.2 meters) Might be worth a shot on glass or walls since it's essentially a flat surface. I only install air release vinyl on glass though.
  15. How should I buy my next latex printer from?

Watson Signs made some good points. Here is my take: If you have to pay a bit more for the printer but gain stellar customer service in the process it's worth every penny extra. All printers break and usually in the middle of a massive job. Until you get it back on line it's just an expensive...
  16. Is it possible to do single pass cut of 3003 1/8" diamond plate aluminum handheld????

Anything I do that requires radiused corners or intricate cuts gets sent out to a local shop. Parts are cut with either a laser or waterjet. Makes my life a whole lot simpler and products a whole lot prettier. Upside is the little bit extra I pay for the service is far less costly than me...
  17. Packaging SP540V for shipping

Blue piece is to secure the head/cutter carriage for transport. You'll need to flush the lines/heads too. Put in a cleaning cartridge then pull ink through the captops until you see clear cleaning solution. As far as crating here is what I know. Build it like bomb proof and insure the heck...
  18. How to go about persuading owners to hire more people.

Miss a couple deadlines... I'm serious. It was that way at my old job. Run people into the ground, start missing major drop dead dates, then maybe think about adding another body. Great fun.
  19. Sign Shop Gremlins [Keeping track of tools?]

So you're the guy that keeps taking them. Cat's out of the bag now.:Big Laugh
  20. Sign Shop Gremlins [Keeping track of tools?]

One sure way to combat walking tool syndrome is to make employees buy their own. Funny how people take ownership when it hits them in the pocket.
