Sure, cut the letters, roll the faces red, install with thru the face screws with blocks of pvc to offset. Might not save any money but the material will be reused and the customer will be happy.

"they're not small, neither wholesalers", so you are buying from large format printers/sign shops that aren't in the wholesale business? That's the issue, they aren't interested in your business all that much and when they are working on their own projects that don't have time to deal with you...

Either wrap or paint. Either way it's not cheap or easy, but the right design will make it lees painful. For instance a nice sky full of clouds with a few vintage planes. Actually a hybrid design, paint a cloud mural and add some vinyl print planes
