  1. The costs of running a business...

Ok, ok, I get that. But he does make the comment that such and such are "business expenses". More than a few times, too. Now, if he's figuring all the costs he has only for the reason of determining what to charge as an hourly rate, so be it. But are you then suggesting that he doesn't...
  2. The costs of running a business...

What I'm about to say is in the interest of any 101 member reading this thread. And thinking of copying your home based business model. I'm thinking there's a lot of "expenses" that would not allow me to sleep well at night. I'm not an accountant. But I think the IRS and other taxing bodies...
  3. Intellectual Property and Copyright Theft In Our Industry.

"Can't you just download it?" I must hear that ten times a week. I tell people we purchase our art, illustration and photos from istockphoto.com. (I know, I know, you only purchase a license to use it) But they always come back with, "hey, no need to do that, I'll just Google it and bring it...
  4. Customers are reluctant to...

I don't get the square foot thing at all. Do you charge for areas that you have to print, laminate and then throw away? We typically will print a piece 54"x210" say for the side of a pickup. A good portion of that is thrown away. (wheelwells, are behind cab, above truck bed, etc.) I know, I...
  5. Customers are reluctant to...

Rodi, I'm liking that idea. Up to say, 2 hours revision time.
  6. Customers are reluctant to...

Interesting answer. But it doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for. Sure you can always bid in an extra thou, but if you're in a competitive market, that work just might walk out the door on you. Looking for more of a business-like answer.
  7. Customers are reluctant to...

make a deposit on a job order, if the final amount is not filled in. Better put this way. When we have a wrap customer, we like to "tease" with a simple, quick layout. It's far from finished artwork with all the frills, consultation, etc. that goes into a wrap, but it's generally enough of an...
  8. Scratches in Print During Application

    Yep, flame 'em out!
  9. "How to" question for Photoshop

    Thanks a bunch. That worked!
  10. canceling cell phone

Ah...piece a cake. Knock out a 4'x6' banner for someone. lol.
  11. "How to" question for Photoshop

When I select my Pen Tool, I don't have any "options" on the Options bar. What am I doing wrong? All the other tools have the options pop right up upon selection of that tool. Anybody?
  12. Wow....how in the world?

Totally unacceptable. Gives wraps a bad reputation.
  13. Radio folks are crazy.

Radio is broadcast. Most shops need narrowcast. (specific to business owners). So you're paying for a lot of shotgun pellets that will never hit the target.
  14. Truck wrap question

Just finished printing the wrap for a septic tank company. His tank is 76" in diameter by 162" long. But it's painted metal, not bare aluminum. But it does have a few welds to wrap over. So the project is similar but not exactly like yours. I'm using 3M 180 Comply with the V-3 Adhesive...
  15. Shop Insurance

Also, please be sure to tell your agent that you sometimes park cars in the shop overnite. (assuming you do) Having client's cars (say you don't finish the wrap by days end) in there overnite makes you a "garage keeper". So your insurance will be a bit higher. Don't find out the hard way...
  16. Dan Antonelli/Sign Craft article

Right on, Marlene! I just read that article in bed last night. It's a good one and contains a few other salient points regarding allowing the client to dictate things. I'm glad SignCraft regularly includes articles about the business side as well as the craft side of this crazy trade we're all in.
  17. 16 Shootings in 3 weeks!

When apprehended and tried, punishment should be swift and publicized. This stuff has got to stop.
  18. Rip-off? You tell me.

It's too bad that the industry seems to be rife with infringment.
  19. how to charge for istockphoto?

Looking for artwork on Istock is a part of layout and design. It's the designer's job. You can't separate the two. However you're charging for design, it's a part of that. The actual cash layout for the license, we pass on to the client. With a small markup. It's never very much.
  20. Computer performance?

Don't know yet. I guess I should, what, open some large files in PhotoShop?
