  1. Cold weather- outside vinyl installs

Just lettered a truck in 15 degree weather. Spritzed with alcohol and watched it steam off to nothing. Applied the cast vinyl and even the smallest serifs on the 1/2" lettering stuck flawless. Am I missing something?
  2. A font or created?

Looks like about 5 minutes with the pen tool and about 100 carefully placed nodes.
  3. Does anyone else have this problem

I never use more than 2 pinch rollers, and set them a good 1/4" in from the edge of the media. And pre-roll your media if it is a brand new heavy roll.
  4. Knife Not Lifting,.Dragging across Vinyl

It might have something to do with the way your file is layered. I have much better luck sending 1 logo to to printer/cutter with 250 copies, than sending 1 file with 250 instances of the same logo. Often times your file will have the negative spaces set to cut twice as they have an additional...

  6. I need to explain to a designer why we have trouble with certain colours

Tell them that thier monitors are backlit RGB and the product is a frontlit CMYK printed banner, and you need a CMYK printed frontlit object to match color from, or a pantone color number.
  7. Bullet Resistant Sign material???

First of all, your dumb customer probably has polycarb. Second of all, somebody in your area sold it to them, and he/she believed whatever the heck the "professionals" had to say. Third of all, sell them some more polycarb, tell him it's the same crap, get thier money, and get them out of your...
  8. Laser Engraved plaque needed

    Gemeni?
  9. A Sign for the holiday season.

I think the word "Avalon" should be the first read and integrate with the company's graphic identity. Then "shop dine stay" should be your second read, with the third read being "warmest wishes of the season" and/or "your winter wonderland to". You want people to see the Avalon sign/building...
  10. Banners 101

Here's a sane answer to the actual reason this thread was posted. Banners 101: Standard Banners are 13 oz. This weight is for 1 square yard of material. You can use glossy or matte finish depending on the application. Grommets are #2 brass and usually placed at all corners and every 24"...
  11. Beer pong table

Done a few of these living in a college town. We print on calendered and laminate with satin calendered laminate for minimal glare. We charge $160 including install on thier sheet of plywood, and then seal all the edges with 2" black gorilla tape. It will last longer than their college career...

  13. Cool job just completed

The lettering is installed directly on the acryllic. The pictures are on 1/4" sintra floating 1/8 off the acryllic. The center sheet is a faux 3d look engraved in aluminum plates floating 1/2" off the acryllic. Wish our shop had a camera with more than 2 megapixels..
  14. Cool job just completed

A fun job just completed for the local university. Our shop does mainly architectural signage and engraving. Contractors installed the blank frosted 1/2 acryllics during renovation and the client suppled sketches of what they wanted. It turned out better than they expected it would. We also...
  15. A general "Future of the Industry" discussion

HP now offers a fully digital inkjet printing press, for about $2.5 mil... Plates and small runs are no longer a problem. It was developed here in Corvallis, I make the some labels for them.
  16. how much should i charge

Wow, we get $45 ea. for 18x12's and $75 ea. for 24x18's. That's .080 with one color cast or reflective. We get white blanks with 1.5" corners, cut, transfer, apply, drill, sell. I'd get $500 for this without a blink, but we have a solid local reputation for architectural signage and such.
  17. screen print posetives on a roland solvent

Make your halftones in your design software. I overprint x2 with a solid RGB black mix from versaworks onto clear velum or acetate or whatever overhead projector plastic is called on our SP540V with no problems.
  18. PDF file with lines broken apart

Or you could open the file in photoshop at high resolution and ust the magic wand tool and click and color.
  19. The Secrets of Tangential

We rock a Summa T1010 Plus (something like that) and it's a 40some inch tangential cutter made in the early 90's. It's very loud and finicky, but with enough practice, this thing will still cut 1/4" letters beautifully. Unfortunately our Roland SP540v cuts 10x nicer and it is non tangential.
  20. Color Management Question

I sometimes tell the customer the that no two monitors are the same. The specific green color the designer chose, was based on what they saw on their monitor. My printer will print the exact color (based on color number values) that the designer specified, however their uncalibrated monitor...
