  1. build it myself CNC

I have been toying with the idea for a while, but now with winter drawing on, I would like to have a crack at building my own CNC router. Not intending serious dimensional work, I would just like to dip a toe in without spending a huge amount of cash. Would anyone who has done this before...
  2. New to Everything...All Advice Welcome

Ditto. I looked at this market myself. It's pretty saturated, plus given shipping costs aren't an issue (small packages) you have a lot of Chinese sites blowing them out on eBay. Can you sell them by the hundreds?
  3. getting back into sign buis. NEED HELP PLEASE

you can give up sign making, but you will always be a signaholic till the day you die. walking down the street you will look at signage and that little itch creeps back, your mouth goes dry and you wonder how much a used solvent printer will set you back... one that will go in the back of the...
  4. Help with laminate plz!

so your boss bought the sign business and the roll stock 3 years ago. How long was that vinyl sitting on the shelf before he bought a failing sign shop? It may just be old vinyl that is way past its use-by date and needs to be tossed.
  5. print/cut 30mil magnet

I think the only viable way to cut magnet using anything other than hand cut is to die cut. I can only imaging the pressure and the wear on the knife to get even close. There are plenty of laser and water cutters that would eat magnet, but $$$ unless you outsource the cut.
  6. Contour Cut after laminating

Buy a Big Squeegee. You can lam by hand.
  7. Printed banner pricing..and another ?..

 This is an interesting thread We run around $8 per square with a $99 minimum, usually free design for anything less than a 20 minute design, grommet and power tape included in the cost. Hem extra. I have been toying with the deposit thing, we don't lose too many designs by not...
  8. Eco-Solvent Ink curing - especially on banners.

Two favourites: Banner Brite a scrim from ND graphics high gloss, prints very nicely, is dry almost instantly...a little weak for prolonged outdoor use. Premium Banner from Allgraphics. This is a satin banner I use for indoor and out, low glare, nice smooth surface like a soft rubber. I...
  9. Contour Cut after laminating

Use versaworks to print the versaworks cropmarks (print&cutalignment) in the Marks tab that the VP will use to line up the cut after lamination. In the cut control tab tell it to print only, print, laminate then feed the job back in to line up the prime crop mark (with the extra dash) with...
  10. Are you superstitious at work?

Always count to 5 before pressing the OK button on Versaworks...otherwise it will lock up and need a resart. Never walk away from printing banner...adhesive is good but banner is plain evil. It will buckle and headstrike if you turn your back.
  11. Eco-Solvent Ink curing - especially on banners.

If after a week your banners are still tacky enough for ink to glue to ink I think it has to be the banner. I have had banner materials like that, tried every combination of heat and profile. In the end I solved it by moving to a different banner stock. I have a couple of stocks, I run hot...
  12. Cutting magnetic sheeting

Aha, I know the problem. You need a decent cutting ruler, one with the rubber/neoprene on the base. I had a heck of a time with magnet until I found a safety Ruler that would hold the magnet while I leaned on the knife.
  13. property rental company logo

Oh I get it, the A is falling over? They manage properties so badly they fall over? Sort of suggests chaos in a trade where you want to suggest order. Also using the word END on its own line...hidden messages? this is full of doom.
  14. This makes me sick to my stomach

The race to the bottom can never be won only lost. If he can survive at those prices then someone else printing from a garage can shave a few cents off...then someone in china can shave a dollar off that. Cutting the cake finer and finer only means when you have a slump or an unexpected cost you...
  15. Media Holder

I have a pair of them in my shop with 6 inch cardboard tubes over the top bar. I do the same but use tape instead of clamps also drape banners over to outgas. Perfect when I have a really long banner to print, just drape over both. The only downside, being Ikea they are getting a little...
  16. My first wrap

    are they soldiers or taliban?
  17. FedEx or UPS?

tweedle dee or tweedle dumb. We use UPS but know from experience both are almost as bad as each other. Just lately UPS seems to have improved. I used to curse them daily now its just weekly. That said I have admiration for the drivers and the telephone support people who try their best for us...
  18. External Harddrives? Who uses them

a couple of 1tb and 1.5tb drives. I keep three important versions of all my data; A monthly copy of the server I drop onto an external drive, a Norton daily backup and an offsite carbonite backup. The Carbonite offsite is now over half a gig and runs very slowly in the background...but it...
  19. cheapy cheapy very cheapy guy

What does it cost this plumber to tell one of his guys to take three days to save $50 when they aren't out on a call? I just send out 6'x4' adhesive with lam to a customer who wanted to save money by mounting it to backing wood themselves. I have a sheet for this that runs to two pages, half...
