  1. Using solvent printable vinyl instead of cut vinyl?

Its the kind of thing you have in stock, a few of yards of black and a few of yards of white. It may come up only once every so many months, but being able to drop cut letters on a job stops that digital customer from walking down the road to your competition. Transfer tape is even cheaper than...
  2. Help! Roland Versacamm Printing Problem

    picture?
  3. misdirected anger at lowballers

I remember when computers first came into graphic design. All of sudden anyone who could afford a mac classic and quark express became graphic designers. What was a skilled and expensive profession became cheap, easy and quick. Damn progress for making things easier and cheaper. I much prefer...

light banner. Get the roller from Home Depot/Lowes and install.
  6. Roland VP 540 too slow

I have to agree the VP 540 is getting slow. I knew it would when I bought it. I'm happy that its now slow. It means my business is doing well and I have to look at more capacity. Right now I'm drooling over the XC and keep the VP next to it. I have to add that if you are printing all day and...
  7. Advice on Hiring a Designer

I have to agree with this. When I was a production manager I had a stable of prima-donna designers who had to be coaxed to work faster (within budget). I have the same dilema. This has been a brutal (good) May for me. I cannot fit another wafer of work in...so what do I do? say no and watch...
  8. reason #3546576 why I dont like farmimg work out!!!!

Would you care to post a name on here or send me the name? We are in the same area, if there is another bad supplier I would like to avoid stepping in that one too. You can stand there and say "the good banner material" and "your highest resolution", they will nod eagerly then go print crap.
  9. Pet peeves anyone?

I guess its just anything to do with people. I'm going to live in a shack half way up a mountain and send out the signage by UPS... oh but the UPS guy will be late...I hate that.
  10. reason #3546576 why I dont like farmimg work out!!!!

I think we must have used the same guy (like there aren't dozens of identical ones). That incredible low price per square foot, almost as low as my cost. We have sent out banners and never been happy. If these guys did a good job, I wouldn't need to keep a printer, but at $1.99 a foot... pay...
  11. SP540 Head height

I only switch to high for the odd material like mesh. Most of the time its left on low.
  12. Sewing a banner Hem

So... Weld or stitch? Price of the small welders is dropping (thank you china), so what is best?

  14. If your not growing, your dying.

You are dying at any size. The bigger you get the more your overheads eat at you. I have run big shops and small (small now), I like small to be honest, but I sure miss two week vacations. I wonder on the thoughts of preparing for retirement... Does anyone now have any hope of retiring...
  15. Surge Protectors?

So what are the specs? since the 540 runs all its power through the same plug it has to support 8-9amps (does that include surge?)
  16. It's official...NO Christmas cards this year.

I sent out about 220 to our main (the ones we hope to see back) customers. All we have back from OUR suppliers is E-Cards! That doesn't even count the baskets and bottles sent to the really good customers. I have to have a little rant here about E-Cards. Its incredibly insincere, to cut and...
  17. Wireless ethernet ??

You need an ethernet bridge and a router, but there is no reason why it wouldn't work.
  18. Wireless router thief

In the setup webpage on all wireless routers is the option to turn the wireless part off. I was a little concerned about security on our older router, there is hacking software that can crack some of the older protocols. I did a test last year using my laptop and sure enough you can beat...
  19. Server dead, I'm so happy!

Another problem with Raid 5 is all the drives are in the same box. What do you do in the case of fire flood theft or (shudder) Bank repo? You need to think Biblical disaster. People living in the ruins are going to need signs and banners.
  20. Wet Application on Glass

Wet (rapid tac) for windows, especially etch. I'll do dry for smaller decals, but not panels I just did an install on that teflon-like glass. A nightmare. I left it for 2 hours and still the vinyl came off with the release. I'll try a few of these ideas though. My workshop windows are...
