  1. Printer stops printing Half way

Check if the capping station is seated properly, sometimes it becomes dislodged from the arms and doesn't get a great seal. The one half darker than the other I'm not sure about at all, clean the encoder strip, make sure you have ink in the lines (no air bubbles)...what exactly do you mean by...
  2. Calendared + Cast combinations?

210 or 200 onto 3850. You can put cast lam over calendared vinyl but it's not a great idea, though not as bad an idea as the opposite. Match cast to cast, calendared to calendared.
  3. what do you lube with?

3-in-1 oil every morning as part of normal maint routine, applied on a lint-free cloth.
  4. Is anyone using 3rd party ink for jv3

Triangle, color is very good, odor is a bit strong. Ran ElevenTen before that and it wasn't great, color lacked vibrancy. I would prefer to run Solaris Eco-Solvent but wasn't an option for a variety of reasons.
  5. Are we green yet?

The Epson GS6000 inks are low-VOC, no nickel inks if you need to run solvent (and who doesn't). Pretty cost effective too, great machine. Honestly when I leave this industry the environmental cost will be a primary reason (not to mention the environmental cost to my own body). That said...
  6. Video Card suggestions

GPU acceleration in PS works fine on ATI cards, at least it does on the 5850 in my home rig.
  7. * Need to find true black ink *

    a) Most of the comments here are accurate, you need to be in a fully profiled environment, that will fix any issues that are fixable with your process/equipment limitations (other than education on the subject). b) You can't expect pure-tone b&w giclee results from a CMYK solvent machine...
  8. Head strikes on Banner - Suggestions?

For 13oz we print at 45/45 on our JV3-160SP, though we rarely run matte. 10oz the heat gets dropped to 42/42--these settings sometimes change depending on relative humidity. Often media buckling has to do with the media not being loaded straight, a bigger problem with large width media as your...
  9. Printing from PHOTOSHOP files

Tiff for output, if I need vector elements I save as .psd and bring it into Illustrator as a link (not embedded) or InDesign, add the vector elements, and export as an x-4 standard PDF. EPS doesn't support color management properly so I avoid it if possible now that Onyx handles PDF well...
  10. setting up the rip to print

98% of the time I tile within Onyx. You can select which tiles you want to print so if you mess one up you can just pull it back up from the archive and select that tile and it'll print exactly the same.
  11. what file format????

Native design files, 150ppi at size minimum, all links and fonts packaged (or outlined). Unless they're working in Quark, then it should be .PDF using the X-4 standard--we don't support Quark (die already!). This is going to vary from shop to shop depending on the software suite being...
  12. Another New Epson GS6000

Assuming you're properly managing your color workflow (just play along) you could use a spectrodensitometer to take readings off the foils you're trying to match. Otherwise print out the full pantone chart (use the coated chart), find something close, use the cmyk values of that color in the...
  13. Heat and Humidity

Adhesive tacks harder when hot as well, which makes it difficult to readjust position before doing final pressure application.
  14. So how do you learn to letter by hand?

I know some well paid, senior designers that never use the justification pane in InDesign or do things like use tracking as a substitute for kerning. I'm seeing a bit of red just thinking about it. Great thread, thanks for the resources everyone. Going to have to try my hand at this simply...
  15. Adwords: Money for nothing or works?

A lot of discussion in this thread about local search. Might want to check out Google Places as part of your marketing strategy.
  16. Where to buy Illustrator?

The difference is the license. When you buy software you're buying the legal right to use it for specific purposes, the physical discs and such are meaningless. It's all the license. Violating the license in any way is the same thing as just stealing the software outright in the eyes of the...
  17. Where to buy Illustrator?

    You understand it incorrectly. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402371.html
  18. Aggressive marketing / new to business!

Common trick is three models/options, not two, and price your ideal price point on the middle offering as that's what everyone will want.
  19. to laminate or not to laminate

I can't think of a time when we actually have put lam on a coro sign but if you're debating it, like the OP is, I'm simply positing that sometimes you can solve those debates by letting your customers make the call and over time you'll develop a system that works for you and your audience. I'm...
  20. Motocross graphics

You can also go back to basics and use a Gerber Edge thermal printer. Printing solid tones on reflective using a solvent printer works really well by the way, and if you print a 50% grey it turns into a silver-ish looking tone. Experiment with it, it's rather fun.
