  1. Fathead

Good to know, I've been looking for a phthalate free solution for a personal project, thanks!
  2. to laminate or not to laminate

Offer both, be honest with the client on the cost and lifespan differences, and have them decide. Seems pretty simple to me.
  3. Aggressive marketing / new to business!

If you want to be aggressive you could get some examples from your competitors (buy them like you're a normal customer) and keep them in your shop to show as comparisons. I don't do that in the sign business but an offset shop I worked at did that for business cards. Once the customer felt and...
  4. 1st Go Kart

What's with the myspace angle? Is the cart fat? Why do we have to look at it crooked?! Anyway I like the treatment around the numbers, though not the numbers themselves so much. Nice first!
  5. Critique time....

Whatever you end up doing don't use drop shadows in logo design, especially not heavy dark giant ones like in the OP. Not only does it look amateur it makes it really hard to work with and you'll piss off every print vendor the client ever has.
  6. Damper Trouble

Is the capping station seated correctly? Sometimes the clips come off the arms that rock the station back and forth which ruins the suction, and it's hard to notice if you don't know to look for it.
  7. Source for 36"x100' POP-UP 10mil semigloss noncurl synth. poly. banner material?!

  8. Please Help ID this specialty vinyl

Looks like some sort of patterned chrome vinyl, possibly from VinylEfx, overprinted on a solvent inkjet. Can't quite identify the exact pattern/vinyl.
  9. Where to buy Illustrator?

Yep, you have to currently be a full-time student or educator (or work for an educational institution) to legally install the education license. You can continue using it after you are no longer a full-time student, etc. but once you aren't you need to pay for retail licenses when you go to...
  10. Is anyone using 3rd party ink for jv3

We run Triangle, much better than the ElevenTen we were using previously. Magenta in particular is a lot more vibrant. Wanted to go with Solaris but couldn't for a few reasons not worth getting into. The Triangle has been great though the chips on the carts are giving us more problems than...
  11. how to start up jv3 in service mode?

Hold buttons down, press start, you'll hear a beep during the startup that you normally don't hear. Should be fine to remove your fingers after the version # pops up. It'll look and act like normal but have a lot more options in the menus.
  12. Source for 36"x100' POP-UP 10mil semigloss noncurl synth. poly. banner material?!

Nevermind! Bad info from a vendor rep., another vendor got us sorted. Heart attack averted! Mods delete/close thread please.
  13. dead jv33

That's probably your problem, quit throwing darts at it! That's a sensitive piece of equipment!
  14. Can I print and cut Variable data with Mimaki???

You could just have whatever you're using to generate your design and integrate the variable data output a 2000 page PDF and print from that. That is, if Rasterlink supports multi-page PDF. I know Onyx does, haven't used Rasterlink.
  15. How do you do the design process?

Good to hear other shops that won't even sketch without a deposit. We still do a good amount of speculative design to land clients and it drives me crazy. Just Say No to Spec Work.
  16. Advice on Hiring a Designer

Speaking as a Graphic Designer, most sign shops don't need GDs they need Production Designers or Prepress Technicians.
  17. old roll of film in the drawer

    Classy!
  18. Packrat wants to be creative!

See if any local educational institutions (art museums that run preschools, etc.) are interested in free scraps, that's what we do with ours. They love it.
