I don't remember the thread but there is a tool that someone posted about that is a precision razor blade basically.. it allows you to set the the precise cutting depth and will cut only the backing paper.. hopefully someone else remembers it and will chime in as well.

I generally mix using One Stroke LB Premium White and whatever color I need for a tint.. I would take white and mix in the 480 purple until i have a shade I like.. just be sure and mix more than you think you'll need b/c it'll be hard to match unless you use a scale the first round and keep notes.
