He has since sold his company to Paul Conway, but he still makes the materials. He told me that there are two options, the Smart Gold which is made with imitation gold leaf and then there is a version that is made with real 23 karat gold. But he said that the real gold material makes up less...
I spin with velvet for all of my real gold work also. This just looks like two completely different materials to me. I may just try to give Leo a call tomorrow and see what he says.
I was about to buy some white reflective today for a job I have coming up that involves lettering several wreckers and big trucks. It will be a multi color job printed using my Edge. I normally use the 5600 fleet reflective, but I noticed 5650RA is available in 15" punched. Has anyone tried...
I was asked to change some truck numbers on a fire truck. I looked over the pictures I was sent and determined the existing material was Leo's Smart Gold. When I sent my quote the customer agreed that the truck had been lettered in Smart Gold 10-15 years ago. So I showed up to do the job and...
After seeing the bigger picture, that is definitely not gold leaf. I have never seen anything like that before. What is it on? Could it be something that was specially made for a manufacturer and screened or thermally printed?
Do you have any pictures that show more of it? It almost looks like gold leaf burnished in a cross hatch pattern and then encapsulated and thermally printed.
Welcome from North Carolina! It's nice to see a fellow firefighter/sign guy on here. I am pretty much in the same boat, learning how to hand letter and stripe isn't easy. I've been told the best thing to do is to find an old sign painter to watch and learn from... the problem is they aren't easy...
I have a large job coming up that will be printed on white reflective vinyl using my Edge. I need to print transparent orange (which I have) and transparent silver or light gray. Gerber does not list a transparent gray foil, but I see that some distributors list the SpectraShade as a transparent...
Are you looking for a script or more of a block font? Serpentine italic is "fast" looking, and Letterhead Fonts and SignDNA have some nice scripts that may work for you if that's what you're looking for. Also artandsignstudio.com has Xtreme Script and some other cool ones.
I am looking for a font that looks similar to this hand lettered work. I have found several from House Industries, but they are all italic or "casual".
Thanks for the info, I send all of my large format prints out to a bigger shop so I will have them try to print it for me with one of their solvent printers. It will have to be printed on 3M/Gerber clear enamel receptive. I will be laying 23 kt. gold by hand, turning, then encapsulating with the...
There isn't enough "black" area there to be able to break it up. There has to be a decent sized border around the gold in order to seal it and prevent any delamination issues. But you are right, I don't necessarily have to have all that clear around the edges. I normally keep it around 1/8"-1/4"...
I am trying to stay away from cutting black vinyl and layering over top. All of the other graphics on the truck will be one piece laminated clear, so it really wouldn't look right to have one that was layered with cut vinyl.
I guess I have just been lucky so far, but I have never had any real gold graphics that I couldn't break down to fit the 11.88" print width of the Edge. Sometimes it is a pain and things have to be broken down in awkward ways, but I have made it work. But now I have to replicate this maltese...
Here is a better picture of a different truck that shows the pattern:

They do some great work for sure. I would like to know if they are printing on the vinyl or layering it. Some of the colors are very opaque and don't have any of the...
