I have had this problem. I have tried cleaning the rollers on my JV3-160SP and tried cleaning the banner material before printing. In the end I wound up switching to a more expensive banner material and the problem has gone away. (knock on wood)

You could try soaking the nozzles by filling the capping station with cleaning solution. i realize it is not a proper nozzel soaking procedure but it would keep them wet and perhaps all you would have to contend with is ink contamination and that is easy to get past.
