Cat hair
We took in a Roland on a trade from a "cat lady" whose little furry friend liked to sit on the printer on cold days and enjoy the free heat. The inside of the printer was covered in hair, the fans could hardly blow out air. We always check the inside of the printers we resell.
those sponges
If you do find the sponge, make sure you get the metal screen that fits on top. If not the sponge will swell up and cause your inks to siphon off.
Clean the track
Clean the track that the wiper runs along, it will be full of ink that flips off the wiper. I have some of those motors if you need one. PM me for more details
Print heads
The Mutoh RJ 900 head is aqueous and will last about a week in a solvent 1204. The Eco solvent inks will melt the top of the head. The Mimaki JV33 will work in a 1204, but it is no cheaper than a 1204 head and Mimaki will not warranty it. The R1800 print heads will no longer work in...

The VP 540 uses the same print heads as the SC 540 , but two less. Your colors are not going to be much different, same ink, same RIP.
You may want to consider having your monitors calibrated to match the printer
