Avery is the worst to get off, always has been. 3M is a pleasure compared to it.
The problem with the bad Avery was with the actual vinyl was missing some stability chemicals which in turn caused it shrink and crack. I don't believe there was a problem with the adhesive.
I prefer the first layout also, I don't see the need for two hammers...

Nothing wrong with adding a little reducer to you Dixie cup. "Although his did look too thin."
The viscosity of a brand new can is different than a can with 1/3 left and a skin on top. Nothing wrong with loosening it up and then palette with reducer when needed.
