"She shows me pictures of some signs she likes. Wants just printed foam core signs she is going to hang on the walls. Easy enough. I have our designer come up with a few concepts - they look awesome - customer hates them."
Hope you got paid for your designers time. Sounds like you should...
$390 sounds right when you consider the facts - if you are working with one piece of material that is 3" x 10' long, working on glass, on a ladder, the aggravation alone is worth the price. And working with 1/4" stripes 10' long with no margin of error can be challenging too.
Wow, thanks for the warning. I did look up the patent and it does exist. After reading through the documentation I realized what it is they have patented. It's the method of taking a large image and dividing it into sections so that it appears seamless. I didn't realize how flawed my thinking...
I've been asked to create a graphic design that will be applied to the riser part of a staircase in an elementary school. The surface is a type of vinyl/rubber that is somewhat slick. I'm not sure how well the vinyl will hold up. There will not be direct contact with the vinyl as people go up...
Google sign engineering - there are several who are licensed in multiple states. You should be able to get a stamped drawing for a couple hundred. I often do my own drawings and send them off to the engineer for clarification and calculatons. If it's an easy job it shouldn't cost much.
We never supply physical proofs. Everything is via email so we have a paper trail on our end. That being said we still get times where the customer signs off by mistake. If it's a minor mistake and a good customer I split the cost.
I don't have an answer to your question about what "cool" products can be profitable also. I might suggest you check out some of the on-line vendors such as Etsy where people are coming up with new and creative products. Maybe you can find a trending product that you can make.
Don't forget to charge for your design time. If they have a certain "look" in mind you may end up doing a few different sketches before they decide on what the sign should look like. I would charge more for the design time and the hand painting ($92 per hour) than to take down the sign, prep and...
I use 3M 5100 reflective. It's good for cut out letters and striping over some minor curves. I always use application fluid and have not had a problem applying it wet. Been doing it at least 10 years.
I don't do a whole lot of vehicles, but I have been using 3M 5100 series for several years. No problems, only thing I don't like about it is that it's hard to remove. Once it sticks to the surface there is no going back.
Do you have a local Small Business Association office near you? They have been very helpful to me on several occasions. The help is free and it's good to get other people's perspective on your situation. I am sorry to hear about your predicament as I also work with my husband and know how...
Might want to give yourself some "wiggle" room since you really don't know what the old posts are buried in. Might be an excessive amount of concrete underground. Then you have the issue of re-filling a large hole. Or it could be the opposite where the existing holes are too shallow and then you...
Has anyone had experience with making street name blades out of PVC? We have made some "test" signs that are about 6" x 36" x 1 1/2" (3/4" back to back) with raised letters and the background routed. There is a slight bow on the length after being outside for over a year. We have a few ideas on...
