  1. If you don't employ an electrician, how do you install signs requiring electricity?

At my last job (since we're not doing electrical signage at my current one), we would outsource the electrical signs. We found a great partnership with another local company - basically we did the sales & design work, then passed it off to them. They applied for the permit, manufactured the...
  2. Thinking about setting up at a marina next summer...

I'm not sure I'd take a printer down there. Seems like too much trouble, unless I was really trying to get into the boat graphics industry. Sounds like you're looking at more of the festival type idea rather than a long-term idea. But I think it might be worth it to take a plotter and some...
  3. Cool Signs in Montgomery, TX, doesn't pay their bills

Actually, he's a vigilante who doesn't care about the law. That's why they call him the DARK knight. While you can say there's an overarching "right", Batman is still a criminal based on the laws. Unless you've got the resources of Bruce Wayne, you will get caught and it will be bad for your...
  4. The new guy

Somebody's slow on the uptake. Wow. :Big Laugh
  5. Outdoor sign vinyl recomendation

I see what you're getting at, but I don't see how it would help in this scenario. My thought is the lexan is supposed to add another protective layer that can be replaced if it gets graffitied badly without damaging the sign. If you apply the sign to the lexan and it gets damaged, you still have...
  6. Here is a fun quote - scam or legit?

Triple your normal price, say payment due in advance of ordering materials. At the same time, if they do accept and pay...could you be handling a stolen car?
  7. Cool Signs in Montgomery, TX, doesn't pay their bills

If a company won't pay for a decent website, that might be a bad sign. Or maybe they didn't finish paying their web developer, so they got a "free upgrade".
  8. Looking for input regarding going 100% mobile - no brick-and-mortar

Why not just run the business out of the owner's garage? You can manage without walk-ins, depending on your business model, and if you've got a sales guy who doesn't mind driving around everywhere. I'd be really worried about the equipment getting damaged in transit - and would the car insurance...
  9. Avery Vinyl with 3M Overlam...no-no or?

I'm a fan of avery's wrap material. Never mixed and matched though.
  10. That's the ticket..........................................

This isn't the dumbest post ever. There's not a single politician quoted yet.
  11. Ideas on how to accomplish

These two guys are on the mark. You could even suggest doing a batch of cut names all at once, even if they're not ready yet to go on the wall. That way, the customer effectively gets a discount on each name versus doing one-offs. Or perhaps doing a batch seasonally. Another option I'd offer...
  12. Faux Etch - Fine VS Coarse

I'm guessing if you're using the glittery "etched" vinyl, you don't care much for authentic simulation. Instead, you're going for an effect etching doesn't provide. I've only used the coarse in the past, but it looks good. I can't offer a comparison thought.
  13. Ultra large wood textures needed

Time. We've got a photographer/videographer on staff, but he's bogged down in other work. If we can purchase a library, that saves us many hours compiling it ourselves. We might have to end up shooting what we need after all, but it's worth a little bit of time researching first.
  14. Ultra large wood textures needed

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep this in mind for other projects, but I don't think it's a fit for our current project. We're trying to avoid tiles if possible, since they're rather noticeable at the viewing distance for these graphics. People will be very close to them, and we're trying...
  15. Ultra large wood textures needed

I'm looking for some very large, hi-res images of wood, stone, concrete, metal, etc. We are doing some large wall graphics that will be viewed from as close as 1-2 feet, so we need great image quality. So far, I've found Arroway Textures, which looks like a possibility, but it's hard to tell if...
  16. Your thoughts on unconventional yard sign production...

Another thing you can try is offering your customers 2 quotes. One for a faster, in-house printing with vinyl on coro, and one for the slower, outsourced direct print. At my last job, we did tons of coro signs with vinyl. Our customers wanted 2-10 signs "right now". We couldn't farm those out...
  17. caulk line on seam

I'm guessing it's probably edge sealer, as well. But I guess if they had some silicone laying around, they could have used that as well. I've always tried to avoid the edge sealer when I can. It makes removal more difficult, and it's easy to make it look sloppy. The only reason I've used it in...
  18. Wraps and the Worth of Installers

If I'm looking for a mechanic, plumber, carpenter, etc., I'm looking for quality work. All things being equal, lowest price wins every time. But comparisons are rarely equal. I'd rather pay a higher labor rate for someone I know will do a good job, than pay Mr. Youtube for the job. There's...
  19. A thing that pi**es me off... a little bit

We've never given customers an option of lamination for vehicle graphics. You get it laminated, or you don't get it from us. The only vehicle graphic I remember ever not laminating was a window perf that would only be on for a 2-day fundraiser marathon. And it was a friend of the boss plus a...
  20. Vinyl print for vehicle tires side wall..??

Why don't you just cut a strip off and see if it adheres to your tires? That would be the easiest way to find out. We've got numerous requests to put vinyl on non-standard surfaces. We have to test them to see if it's possible. My suspicion is that the cast vinyl would not hold up well long...
