  1. "New" pet peeves

Personally, I prefer the look of periods to dashes for phone numbers. e.g. 123.456.7890. Definitely don't use ( ) anymore. Actually, I think I was in middle-school when the 10-digit requirement came to DFW. The not capitalizing websites for legibility reminds me of people who are obsessed with...
  2. Grateful Sign Maker

As part of the new generation in the industry, I grew up with computers. My first family computer was a DOS-only hand-me-down from my uncle. And I've seen all the stages since then (except I purposely skipped the Vista stage). I love the advances in technology and the productivity it enables...
  3. You know you're in the sign business too long when...

My wife has mostly stopped commenting on it when she catches me studying signage when we're out and about. But she does like to point it out every now and then.
  4. order management??

I've started using Redbooth, since all I'm working with is order management. Billing and all that is separate. For the volume and type of work we're doing now, it's been really useful.
  5. VENT - Things that annoy you in the print industry.

When my supervisor (the Designer, who did an internship in a print shop that barely used their wide format printer once a week, and therefore knows all about printing) touches my equipment while I'm out on an install. Then says "Hey, did you change something on here? It's not working right." I...
  6. Vehicle Magnet Supplier

I've done tons of the magnetics. We'd print and laminate vinyl, then apply to the magnetic. Trim to size, and you're done. These can really have a great profit margin on them if you do it in-house. One thing to warn you about, applying them takes a bit different technique. Because the mag...
  7. Is there a no overlaminate option to help protect digital prints from flatbed?

You do have to know what terms to google, too. If you're not sure what something's called, you can waste a lot of time on Google. But, you can still search the forums here first.
  8. Clear repositionable vinyl

How long are they intending to keep the print on the acrylic? And in what conditions? A lot of the regular, clear vinyls will remove cleanly if it's a short-term application. Also, if it's in a climate controlled space, that'll help with a clean removal too. If you leave it on for a couple years...
  9. Wrap vs Cut Vinyl for Windows?

From my experience, you lose the benefit of the air egress the moment you put application tape over top.
  10. Loading tape with tab for webbing laminator

I agree that taking 1-2 seconds to make my own tabs wouldn't make another product worth buying. I've started doing the tabs when I'm taping down vinyl for install because it leaves less adhesive upon removal, making for a cleaner install. I'm not interested in having to keep up with yet another...
  11. VENT - Things that annoy you in the print industry.

iphones are also horrible. I had one customer in particular I wanted to take his iphone and make it a permanent part of his anatomy! We'd send him a digital proof, and he'd complain about the colors. So we'd resave/resend it. Same problem, and he's thinking out loud that we're idiots. Finally...
  12. Box truck wrap intall question

I'm not sure about fiberglass, but I've got a recurring job of laying cast vinyl on powdercoated MDF boards. They've got a slight texture to them which shows straight through the vinyl. But it sticks just fine. And, actually, the texture helps the install go easier, since the air has more places...
  13. Vectorising help

I'd take your money to hang a Picasso in my home. But I don't know anyone who'd be willing to pay for that service.
  14. fabricate players roster boards?

It's nice of them to give you such a detailed picture, so you can really tell what you're looking at... I'd also suggest velcro. It's an easy change out, and you can even reface the old substrate pieces if they want to save $1-2.
  15. Sometimes mondays are tough!

I have having a mix of regular and reverse rolled material - especially when it's harder to tell the difference. Reminds me of my first year in printing. My boss told me to throw on the gloss vinyl (we usually ran matte) because the customer specified gloss. So I grab a roll of gloss and start...
  16. Job pricing help

At that quantity, we'd be hard pressed to get a reasonable price doing it in-house compared to outsourcing it. Not to mention it'd tie up our printer for too long, since we have only one print/cut machine. 1-color on clear is an easy job to outsource and still make a good profit.
  17. VENT - Things that annoy you in the print industry.

One of my ongoing struggles with production: 54" material....52" ruler *sigh*
  18. VENT - Things that annoy you in the print industry.

Don't forget about when they resave it as a .eps! *facepalm*
  19. Is there any way to fix leaning retractable roll up banner?

You could have him try rotating the pole. If the pole has become bent because of use, rotating it 180 degrees might straighten it up.
  20. is the optional take up reel (TU-2) worth the investment ($2100)

I do a lot of print-lam-cut jobs, and I don't really trust the Roland to cut accurately after 8 ft, based on my experience. So I usually run jobs from 4-8 feet long. Do I need a take up roll? Absolutely! I will chain a series of jobs back to back in my rip and let it run everything together...
