  1. Vinyl darkening with age?

Considering most vinyl is only rates up to 10 years max (and a lot of them in the 5-10 year range), I'd say 7 years was normal lifespan for a sign. Actually, that's probably past lifespan down here in Texas. Not sure it'd be worth the money to try doubling up on the laminate. That's just a...
  2. Your thoughts on unconventional yard sign production...

At the places I've worked, we've never had a flatbed, and didn't have the volume to outsource. Doing 10-20 signs of printed vinyl on coro is no big deal, unless you're slammed with work.
  3. Avery MPI1005 EZ RS +DOL1360 vs 3M 180CV3 + 8518

I started out in the industry using the Avery 1005 for wraps. No experience with 3M for comparison - probably because my boss didn't want to pay the premium price they offer. Had to use up a roll of FDC wrap vinyl when I started my current job, and it definitely wasn't close to the performance...
  4. remove old letters & install new- questions

I'd say use a plastic scraper for removing any leftover adhesive. I'd try to avoid using anything metal, which would scratch easier. Can't say much about the install. Only thing I've personally mounted to glass is vinyl.
  5. Sorting your "Drops"?

Sort as you go. Smallest pieces go up front, biggest pieces in the back. I like the grease pencil idea. That way, you can grab a blank and know what size it is. Both of these slow you down during individual production jobs, but will speed up your process overall. Taking 30 seconds to mark and...
  6. What you guys do if you burn out?

A couple thoughts: 1) Your body wasn't built to run 24/7. If you're working 7 days a week consistently, you need to change something. Either turn down jobs or hire someone who can help with the workload. It's just like if you ran back-to-back marathons. You can haul through the first one, but...
  7. illustrator and vector question

You're taking an image that was built in RGB and transferring it to CMYK. This completely screws up any transparency and colors. I've been driven mad by this process too. The only real solution I've found is to resize the object you want in the RGB file, then flatten it. You won't be able to...
  8. table cloths near austin, tx

Does anyone near Austin, TX, do printed table cloths? I have a company in Dallas that I used when I lived up there, but was wondering if anyone was local?
  9. What do you think this is worth? In your area?

It sounds like he's outsourcing the install. If you're only getting charged $30 for that service, then why not charge your customer $65. It's an easy $35 for you, and gives you a competitive edge. Now, why on earth the installer would only charge $30 is beyond me. But if he's happy with that, ok.
  10. Applying Application Tape

You could web up your laminator with app tape, if you've got one.
  11. Printable Maps?

You might try checking with the city or county. A lot of times they have survey maps that are public domain documents. Or add "large format" to your google search.
  12. Wow, that's a high price

I think this is the idea of lot of people walk in the door with. They're assuming you're a used car salesman.
  13. VENT - Things that annoy you in the print industry.

My boss asked me what I thought about doing something like this in vinyl. He showed a website with tons of screen printed yeti cups with super fine detail. And then wants to do that with vinyl...:banghead: It took a good bit of explanation to get him to realize we can't cut those fine details...
  14. Wow, that's a high price

    Here's a website selling 3x8 for $36 - found on a quick search for "cheap banners" https://www.bannersonthecheap.com/
  15. Laying a sign and Laminating prints

At my first sign shop, we started out with a really crappy cheapo laminator that was horrible at it's job. The two sides of the roller adjusted separately, so it was almost impossible to get even pressure across. And the rollers were not quite right either. At some point, the boss decided he had...
  16. Poor service from supplier?

I'd call that high on the sleazy scale. Maybe he talked you up because he gets a bigger cut on the sale of 3rd party ink? But if that's really all the help he offered, I'd look at taking my business elsewhere - even if it was to another rep at the same company. When I was brought on to my...
  17. Interior wall graphics - need material suggestions

Thanks. It really is an awesome space. I won't be seeing it much personally, though. It's across the street from our current location. All the office/computer types are moving over there. The product engineer and I are staying in the old building, which will be all production area. The new...
  18. Interior wall graphics - need material suggestions

So I'm looking into films for an interior wall wrap for our new office space. It's an "industrial" style building in the Old Town area, with corrugated metal panels, exposed brick, and some painted drywall. We've got multiple types of surfaces, but only want to buy one roll of material. This is...
  19. Avery 2611

Tim, how did your experience with this material hold out? My boss asked me to look into wall graphics, and this was one I was considering. We have a new office space he's looking at decorating, and it's got a mix of painted drywall and exposed brick. Did you like the print quality? Any issues...
