  2. Attention Oldies...

Nice read.. and I think you hit it on the head... ego. I think confidence is a good thing. But I let my ego get in the way when computers came in. I let my ego get in the way plenty of times when being close-minded about some new way of doing something, like LED and digital print. One huge...
  3. Attention Oldies...

For the most part: There is no "standard" for fastening push thru and though I try to give every detail. I have to allow the fabricator some allowance for how they fabricate a sign. I deal with more fabricators than I care to think about. All have their own way... but... during the initial...
  4. Attention Oldies...

I used to call out welded studs, but was never happy with the finish job done with the face distortion. I started calling out this... Welding studs to a panel, then using VHB/Lords and attaching panel/stud to the interior of the cabinet. Then attaching push through with brake formed aluminum...
  5. Attention Oldies...

My first idea was spraying the whole thing, lettering and all, since all of it is matte... the sign is attached and close to apartments and the thought was the city would freak.
  6. thoughts on the Vision 2550 engraver router?

If i had to qualify all of my experience, it would have been a lengthy mechanical answer that would give a tooth drilling a better experience... I don't think I could have said it better Gigi. As for me... I was never thrilled with producing ADA signs. I've produced them too, it can be a...
  7. Attention Oldies...

So many of us have been in this business for years and years. I think at some point, this can work against us. This has been on my mind for a while, some of my angst coming from sign and design forums, most from running work using various vendors all over the US. it's probably a man...
  8. Old VS New - Need Critiques!!!

Working on a business plan, location plan, sign matrix, and a long post... boooring stuff, I couldn't help myself, I finished a few of the other ideas I had. What did the boss think of your design?
  9. email Etiquette

Hey, I'm taking the holistic approach (insert magical new age hand gesture) to all my email's so I have better juju.. It took me a while to get used to being called "pal" from my east coast contacts and clients. Where I'm from, "Pal" could get you punched in the nose. By the way...
  10. Do you really need a phone # on your sign?

I'm having my phone number tattooed to my left buttock... Normally I try to get them to put a phone number on the window or door. I hate clutter on an ID sign. Luckily for me, most codes restrict phone numbers on an ID sign.
  11. Unionizing Sign Makers

At an exhibit house I worked at, I had to join... This was the local union I belonged too: http://www.local831.org/index.htm Didn't work there long enough to make any difference in pension, insurance or benefits and even though I got paid a lot, they took a lot.
  12. Old VS New - Need Critiques!!!

I do thing the new one is an improvement, most anything would have been... "woof", I think the only way to convince the person in charge is to show the logo in use. I was bored and after seeing "bikecomedy's comment on the "V's", I played with it for a few minutes...
  13. Old fashioned in KY..

Nice to see a street artist branching out... lots of young artist getting into lettering right now. I was just talking to my son's friend who is trying to make money at it and started hand lettering too. Don't know if you are interested, or seen it, but check out: gigposters.com lots...
  14. Does anyone have any experience with Learn2PaintSigns.com?

we all learn differently but there is nothing like learning and training from a crafstsman... I think a letterhead meet and learning from a sign painter MAY help more than this CD BUT! ...one day or a week won't cut it. The DVD's, It's the cost of one cheap door graphic... why not give...
  15. Optically Centered?

This non-comformist/rule breaking reminds me of my punk days... hanging out at this punk venue one of my buddies yelled out "were so rebellious"... problem was, everyone looked the same with green, orange or purple mohawks and spiky hair, well except one older gentleman in yuppie wear and...
  16. Optically Centered?

I guess I better post the elements/principles of art and design for those who might benefit... The video is a quickie version... I posted it before... The PDF is more intense, but only really scratches the surface... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH446lgDrW8
  17. Optically Centered?

My Opinion is: Learn optical center mechanically (like in Mike Stevens Book)... Once you get the hang of it and your eye gets used to it, practice without the guides... Remember, there is vertical and horizontal visual center. I made the mistake this week of not adjusting my...
  18. Optically Centered?

The correct term might be "PRINCIPLES" not "rules" We see a lot of poop work on this site... is that rule breaking or poor use of the principles of art, design or layout? That means there is no bad art or design... but there is. Art (and design) uses principles. even when you are...
  19. New Logo for fairly new sign company

Awesome post Dan.. Neato, The design I did, took about 10 minutes to execute, then the wrap and cards about a half hour... but thats not what actually happened... I design ideas... not images... and usually try to convey that in the most simplest form. I saw this thread and was...
  20. Interesting Architect coversation on job bid

Part of my job was writing specifications for architects and environmental graphic design firms. The reason why specifications are so precise is to weed out the hacks and create a standard. In some instances, I have had to insert approved vendors on a few projects but always had the "or...
