It sounds like an ink flow issue for sure. You might want to change the little claw like part that connects the damper to the ink line. Change the o-ring along with it to rule that out. After that it could be the valve in the back of the ink cartridge is either not opening properly or is...
Keep the cap top and wiper clean and check the bottom of the had for ink build up once a month and you should be fine. As long as the cap top seals with the head and the pump can pull ink down, the head should last 3 - 5 years. I have seen heads last 10 years in some cases.
You got it. Setup the sleep setting and it should be good to go. Refresh interval uses less ink so some people prefer setting that up instead of the cleanings. Instead of pulling ink through the head like a cleaning cycle does, it fires the nozzles a few times and the pump sucks up the remains...
Make the object you want to have the gradient solid green and then copy and paste the same object in front of that object. Make a black to white gradient and then set the transparency setting to, "Multiply" instead of, "Normal".

Does it do the same thing when you print a vector file? If it only happens on bitmap images I would play around with the rendering intents and see if that changes anything.
When ink falls out of the head it is usually a bad damper and/or there is an air leak somewhere in the system. Start with the damper and see if that fixes the issue. Also, check the bottom of the head to make sure there isn't an inkcicle hanging down which could cause ink to drip as well. If...

It's so cheap because it's a toy. The thing is not going to last nearly as long as a commercial plotter and it is going to be much slower. If you could see a 10,000 sticker job done on one of these and a commercial plotter side by side you wouldn't be as annoyed.
