  1. File Server

The state of SOHO NAS systems has changed a lot, Synology and Qnap offerings blow away windows home server in speed and feature set. Home server is basically a dead product as well. If you're happy with it that's great, but it's not something you'll be able to use forever. The pooled JBOD RAID...
  2. File Server

The problem is HDs are mechanical and the most failure prone part of a computer. Even having 1 non-redundant offsite is not true backup. The offsite should have redundancy as well. I've been through hundreds of crash recoveries, I did SOHO tech support in college and trained as a MSCE and CCNA...
  3. Sending large files via dropbox

38MB is tiny get better internet. We use a variety of methods. WeTransfer, DropBox, YouSendIt are most common but also still plenty of good old school FTP. Compress before sending using 7zip or your choice of zip compression tools.
  4. Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

As I'm in the Festivus camp, Happy Holidays, but I don't really care what you say to me as long as it's not prosthelytizing and annoying.
  5. File Server

Unless you have years and years of experience running your own NAS I'd recommend a Synology or Qnap NAS over a self-built. Even the (nicely done) dedicated distributions like FreeNAS and OpenFiler can go very wrong and then it's up to your experience to fix it. This is a terrible position to be...
  6. Spent last weekend out of this world

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spin-off_technologies Sounds like an amazing time skdave.
  7. Looks like hiring time has come.

Depends on the position responsibilities. "thewvsignguy" 10-12/hr to start is more than reasonable for a college kid with CS training. Most design internships pay more than that for * sake, though they're delusional if they think a community college anything will get them anywhere real in the...
  8. Adwords

Whatever motivates you. PPC guys often work on a percent spend scale, usually for a small monthly spend it'll be around 10% of the spend but they'll have a spend minimum that may be out of reach. Doing it yourself can teach you a lot about your market though, so as long as you're having fun...
  9. HP26500 on board i1 and Onyx Thrive

Whoa, nice. Can you do the same on the 25500? I don't recall seeing that anywhere in the menus.
  10. Over 4 Grand in Mail from Stranger...

This. It's a common scam. Direct mail scammers are getting really good at making things seem official, there really needs to be some new legislation on the issue but until then...just be careful people (especially you old people, so trusting!).
  11. I've lost a valued employee.....Merry Christmas

What is this, the AARP forums?
  12. Build your own arcade system

I used to do this as well but you should also look into Raspberry Pi for future emulator builds. My wife and I like to play Jeopardy for the NES and laugh at the cold war questions, but really SNES Mario Kart gets the most play, as it should.
  13. Tear it apart

    Needs more jetpacks.
  14. HP26500 on board i1 and Onyx Thrive

As far as I know you can't use the onboard i1 to calibrate media profiles. It's only used at the factory to calibrate the machine and possibly as part of the auto head adjustment (not sure on that).
  15. Christmas gifts

The gift of not spamming them with trinkets they don't need.
  16. I've lost a valued employee.....Merry Christmas

This email joke about as old as time and this not a difficult HR problem, which makes it as unfunny as it is old.
  17. Mayan Prophesy

The Mayan, like the Incan and Aztec, calendar just resets during this shift. The world doesn't end. The calendar just starts over again. What's so hard about a circle...? OMG DOOM! Superstition and conspiracy are the refuge of the small minded.
  18. Cloversites com

No such thing as a good flash template. Hire a web developer. If you're really too cheap to do so (really?!) use Squarespace.
  19. Cyber Squatting

It's actually pretty easy to get a squatted domain released these days if you have a remotely viable claim. When it gets tricky is situations like nissan.com -- it's owned by a guy with the last name of Nissan who runs a company called Nissan Computer, not by Nissan the auto group. It's an...
