  1. Opinion Any Opinions On Any Of These Laminators?

I would recommend. The price is right, they work great, little/no maintenance, small footprint.
  2. Opinion Any Opinions On Any Of These Laminators?

Vastly prefer the Kala unless something requires heat. It's faster, tracks almost perfectly, and with slitters you can trim (it's not perfect, but it's pretty close) as it's going on the take up.
  3. Woodgrain Cut File Contest!

This might be one of the wildest takes I've ever seen on Signs101. It's baffling to me that somebody would be offended by potentially getting free advertising from a distributor AND winning a roll of vinyl. All for sharing a cut file that's probably been used somewhere before.
  4. Opinion Any Opinions On Any Of These Laminators?

    Still working! No issues.
  5. If the big design firms...

    This spoke to me.
  6. When someone asks..."Is that the best price you can give me?"

I definitely got your point, was just reinforcing that option does not equate to discount regarding making someone feel like they have choices versus giving them a discount because they asked for one. Engendering the idea that some customers get special treatment via discounts is only going to...
  7. When someone asks..."Is that the best price you can give me?"

Sure, but there's a pretty significant difference between giving a customer options and caving to anybody who asks for a discount.
  8. When someone asks..."Is that the best price you can give me?"

Why even bother figuring out pricing then? Why set margins? Just sell your product for whatever price your customer wants to pay. If y'all want to teach your customers that haggling is the rule at your shop, then by all means, go for it. That's your business. Just don't be surprised when it...
  9. When someone asks..."Is that the best price you can give me?"

Unless someone is already requesting the least expensive material we offer, the answer is always "yes, but..." Even then it's "yes, but you have to order 100." CanuckSigns is correct, the type of customer that wants to nickel and dime you to death is, in the end, unlikely to order from you...
  10. Illustrator CC Question

You can modify almost any shortcut in Illustrator. I've never messed with it before, but it's there. CRTL+SHFT+K, I think? Edit: ALT+SHFT+CTRL+K or in the Edit menu.
  11. Buying a UV Printer, what do you suggest

Well, since you're a new shop, I'm gonna guess a swissQprint is out of your price range. That's the "best" true flatbed out there. In all honesty though, unless you've already got a big client that requires you to own and operate a true flatbed, you're going to be better served by a hybrid...
  12. Illustrator CC Question

AI is 100% more powerful than Flexi. It's definitely more difficult than Flexi too. Watch lots of YouTube videos. Once you learn everything that AI can do (which is a lot) you can find tutorials for almost anything online. Also, just monkeying around with it is a good way to "discover" new...
  13. Holiday Inn Lighted Faces

Can't say with 100% certainty, but it definitely looks like a matte or possibly satin/luster finish. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Holiday Inn definitely wants to preserve their brand standards, so you'll most likely have to use supplied artwork. What were you planning on...
  14. Suggestions How's this done? ( Correctly )

This has come in handy for me before: https://www.scantips.com/calc.html
  15. Suggestions How's this done? ( Correctly )

Depends on how pixelated is "too" pixelated for you. If you're not too terribly worried about people getting up real close and personal, 75 should suffice, 150 would be best, if it's an art piece - 300 PPI. [Edit: Plus the stuff rjssigns said about copyright. Whoops.]
  16. Rant Customers who want things asap, but won't get you what you need

Actual snippet of that conversation: Customer: "The graphics on the sliding door are way too small." Designer: "The van doesn't have a sliding door." Customer: "YES. It does. I'm looking right at the proof." Designer: "Which proof? There's no sliding door on our proof OR on the van you brought...
  17. Rant Customers who want things asap, but won't get you what you need

Oh, I was totally kidding. Our clients don't even read proofs. Edit: Case in point, customer called complaining that the graphics on their van didn't match the proof. They were looking at graphics on their sprinter and wondered why the utility van didn't match. After approving the proofs for...
  18. Rant Customers who want things asap, but won't get you what you need

I can't decide if Gino is using urban slang or if he meant to type group.
  19. Rant Customers who want things asap, but won't get you what you need

Nah, you're right. The problems are the same, just different. Same problems, new ways of complaining about them. ;)
  20. Rant Customers who want things asap, but won't get you what you need

Do you just force them to read the article? Haha! We have a couple of clients that hold up the works ALL THE TIME and it's very frustrating. They want to change one little aspect of a sign that goes against brand standard and all of the sudden everything grinds to a halt while everybody and...
