  1. Looks like it wasn't meant to be.

I have to agree John. There's no stopping it. The internet is a tidal wave that is hitting our shores and with people in third world countries starving, no amount of logic or right or wrong is going to make it go away. Nearly everything today is a commodity unless you are specialized enough to...
  2. Mario and the Airhead Garage

No matter what decisions you make in starting out, your ultimate success or failure will come right down to you. Going from a designer in a cubicle to a full blown, even one man shop, is a huge undertaking. Keep on researching every single aspect of the business in the direction you want to go...
  3. my new logo

John did you check to see if the domain name is available :)
  4. Logo feedback

Yea my bad. I read it last week and didn't reread it again.
  5. Logo feedback

What is the point of the Maltese cross? Do you specialize in fire department apparatus? Your color combinations do not work well given the design you have chosen and the design elements you have chosen do not work together. You have many conflicting elements all working against each other. What...
  6. Is there metal lettering that is harder to steal?

I had one sign stolen three times that marked the entrance to the fishing fleet in Montauk, located in the Hamptons. I went to all lengths to make it difficult for them to steal. They used a torch one time and cut the steel band I had around the sign and anchored to the 14" thick pilings with...
  7. hand drawn or a font ???

Joe there isn't one serif on the font in question and if you look at the horizontal stroke on the R, it slants downward, not straight across as in the Serpentine example. Also note the stroke thickness on the middle of the S's. So not sure why you insist they are the same font. I know my eyes...
  8. hand drawn or a font ???

    Definitely not Serpentine
  9. hand drawn or a font ???

It's some kind of font. Not hand painted.
  10. Cedar sign finishing for natural look

Look into a clear oil based penetrating sealer if you want it to stay natural. Make sure you let it soak in plenty, especially if it's an outdoor sign. At some point in the future it might even need another coat if they want it to last for many years.
  11. AmVets retrofit dimensional sign

Several years ago I made a monument sign for an event center. It didn't go so well and they sold the building to the local AmVets chapter. One of their people covered up my original sign with plywood and painted their name on it. Two months ago, I was asked if I could make them a new, better...
  12. Hello from inkDOTS - Cypress (NW Houston) Tx 77429

Greetings from the land of oranges, cows and old blue haired crinkly people!
  13. Teaser piece

Bill I should point out that they are white plastic balls and we painted them gold.
  14. Teaser piece

Steve you are correct in that observation, and only someone like yourself with trained eye would pick that up, but I've found that the average client can't tell the difference between prismatic letter construction and a walnut. That and I'm too lazy to tweak it any further :) I count on all the...
  15. Teaser piece

LOL Curtis, I had forgotten about that secret dimensional sabotage :)
  16. Teaser piece

Bill, Home Depot sells them. 12" diameter run about $16.00 each
  17. Teaser piece

Although not really progression pics, here are a few more of the pieces to the puzzle. Little by little, it all comes together as a completed sign.
  18. Teaser piece

Thanks everyone. I always enjoy seeing them come to life in stages. Just wish I'd take more progression pics. Sometimes I'll think of it but most times I'm too busy with other things or being interrupted by the phone, emails, and walk in customers. The day definitely goes by too fast!
  19. Teaser piece

All the layers are cut out separately, then painted, then assembled from bottom to top. Mostly 3/4 and 1/2" material.
  20. Teaser piece

Here's another one in the works. The farm scene is hand painted with 1-shot enamel and then will be digitally printed because we're doing two signs for them. The pictorial is based on their farm in Minnesota and their farm here in florida. They wanted to blend the two farms into one painting.
