  1. Have you seen plywood lately???

Our costs for lumber here in NS have doubled, it's bonkers. It's quite short supply as well... We've had a few sign cradles with alupanel now because it's cheaper than mounting corro to wood.
  2. Masking tape

We use yellow tesa tape - seems to be great to reposition a decal while we're installing, but doesn't leave any residue. Really like it. Pretty sure it's from Grimco, actually.
  3. What percentage of your work is outsourced?

We only outsource things that we can't make (we don't create channel letters or dimensional letters, for instance). We kind of "outsource" some of our install (our vehicle wrap guy is subcontracted, for instance).
  4. Need Help https://www.calmstrips.net/

Huh that's kind of neat! I don't know what they actually feel like, but we've had a floor laminate that had a kind of sandy texture, and I know there are carbon fibre laminates and such. I wonder if the bottom is just a regular decal vinyl, but the laminate is something odd?
  5. I'm getting out of signs, found my dream job!

Ah yes, the standard Canadian coming-of-age ceremony.
  6. OEM/Stock Boat Graphics

+1 for retail, honestly. We've had to re-make graphics, and sometimes they're a breeze... and sometimes they're not. Labour is always so expensive that I wouldn't want to do it if it were available online, unless we were quite slow.
  7. Question Keencut

We've got a 10' titan cutter beside out 5'x10' table lengthwise, and we use it almost daily. It's been great to just keep everything neat. I use it to separate all of our jobs that are going to have different substrates, make a big roll smaller for laminating. Just fits well into our workflow...
  8. Best technique or program to convert CMYK to RGB or vice versa

We use Color Bridge as well, though we rarely have to submit to vendors that don't accept PMS. Our Color Bridge book is very handy for people trying to match banners to business cards to signage, etc. Agree w/ above, too - a Photoshop action should help if it can change the profile. I have...
  9. Need Help Applying Heat to Glass

We also don't use heat - paint razor and patience :} and a quote to reflect the time it takes!
  10. NOW HIRING ISSUE

Yeeeeah we're in Halifax, it's the same thing. We don't own a home and we've got no chance at getting enough of a downpayment to get one - it's like the prices are rising as fast as we save. And it's not like we don't save. My spouse is working full time salaried, and I'm working 40 hours a week...
  11. Need Help Full wall mural

We occasionally use Avery2611 for full wall murals, since it's pretty thick, but I agree with previous posts for this one - reg vinyl (maybe an Avery 2923), and get that matte lam on there, esp for a nursery since they're probably going to be washing it plenty. 1" overlap.
  12. Lobby directory signs

We use acrylic for these kinds of jobs, but yeah it makes a good substrate. We even sometimes skip the small cut letters - a rectangle of etched with the tenant's name printed on it looks clean and snazzy, and then you only have to remove one piece per tenant instead of many letters. And less...
  13. Upcycling ideas

We use some scraps around the shop when moving signs that we want to be careful not to scrape, or when a client comes by with a trailer and needs a bit of padding under it.. sometimes we use the backs for drawing diagrams at meetings, or for laminating (instead of kraft paper)... just as a...
  14. Need Help eps cut contour files in VersaWorks version 6.9.1

I've had to re-save cut files (and other files) for Versa sometimes. Usually things with odd rasters embedded in them struggle. Check your colour mode; sometimes I find just switching it to and from RGB/CMYK can sometimes clear it up, as occasionally the program is saving some piece of...
  15. Maybe stupid question about vinyl and lam

Yes, we've had jobs where they've sent us unlammed IJ180 to wrap a door and it was just awful, hence why we were hesitant.
  16. Maybe stupid question about vinyl and lam

Thanks for the advice folks, naked vinyl it is. I can "bare"ly wait.
  17. Maybe stupid question about vinyl and lam

This might come off as a really foolish question, but here goes. We've got a few white decals to do for a vehicle, and we've got some Avery MPI1105 hanging around the shop that's just the right size. We're having a shop disagreement - I think that it needs to be laminated because, even...
  18. Calling out size- height 1st, length 2nd?

+1 for labels and +1 for making sure inches and feet are clearly labeled too. Clients almost never get the measurements right, so if we clearly state everything down to a tee in the proof sheet, it covers our butts. It also makes sure that nobody gets confused from design to production to...
  19. Need Help Versaworks 6.9 rip time

Like I mentioned above, using the right profiles or making your own profiles is the best way to get your printer to print it's best colours. Here is a thread that discusses this: https://signs101.com/threads/how-many-profiles-do-you-really-need.160311/#post-1494578...
  20. Ever feel like giving up before you really got started?

Nah, I think the signage people up here are more focused on kidneys.
