In regards to the fiberglass resin. Are you using polyester or epoxy? I'm guessing polyester to keep the costs down. And do you clear-coat them after if they would be used outside?
I think I may want to try this process.
Thought this might help the ones that are thinking I should try some 3D. This is a simple Wall hanging I put together It is made of Blue Foam Board (Local Hardware Store) I made a simple Hotwire table, cut the design in vinyl place on the foam. Cut to the edge of the vinyl. Paint it using house hold latex paint 3 coats. than take some fiberglass resin and poor into the top of your design for a doming effect. (Poor slow allowing the resin to go to the edge it will stop and will not flow down the sides) Let cure and show it to your local car dealership don't be surprised whey you don't come home with it.
This sign was done using Stiro Spray 1000 then painted using latex 25 year Paint from ACE Hardware. Cost to build this sign around $250.00 Sold for $1,768. This sign took only 13 hours to make. With out a CNC Machine. (any questions?)
That was start to finish time.
Time dinkering with it was about 3.5 hours.
I can pick this apart in my mind and exactly how it's made... but how the heck am I going to justify charging the customer nearly $2,000 for this???? Any tips on that part? Or do these things just plain sell themselves? I also realize that shipping costs are going to get anyone who'll think about ordering one of these signs online as they can't be cheap to ship.
So.... What do you do with all of the scrap?
I did a huge project a couple of years ago with EPS and the biggest problem that we didn't consider was the amount of scrap. Nothing that was big enough to save ended up in the scrap corner. This is a picture of the corner of my shop towards the end of the project. If my scrap pile is this big, yours must be mammoth.
Since I first saw the 3-D Dodge logo 3 hours ago, I just built a hot wire saw and tried it.
It works.
Now, to the lumber yard tomorrow for some styrofoam. The only question is. What should I make first?
Get a hold of me and I would be glad to show you how to take your trash and turn it into 1000s of dollars I recycle every little flake.
I will show you how to make it back into usable product to carve another sign out of it.
This is one of the things i teach in my classes.
I would say "GO FOR THE GOLD" Try to do your company logo.
Makes for a great sample and it will advertise for you.....
Hmmmmmm
If you need some help don't be afraid to ask.
