  1. Thoughts on a Vutek Uv Printer

keep in mind that, though these are on the market very cheap, replacement parts are NASA space shuttle expensive. getting in to flatbed on the cheap should be done with a dual dx5 or Ricoh GS2200 based hybrid from china. get one of these for $16,500, boards and such are cheap...
  2. Eye candy / Filter forge

i've used filter forge a bit. it builds a fresh image vs filtering the given pixels. 2500px is the max' you can filter. if you want to make a very large image you'll need to break it up into tiles. i used to be really in to it but find myself back to using photoshop only to build the desired...
  3. Fog Juice?

that krylon is CAB acrylic with UV inhibitors. figure it would be too expensive for large format. frog juice is great stuff for spraying large solvent prints. the rattle can is for sample purpose only, in my opinion. frog juice and an HVLP gun is great. the reason it works well is it isn't a...
  4. Color filling routed HDPE / Starboard / Colorcore

i would strongly advise any one doing a large section of color fill resin into an HPDE cavity to keyhole a path within that cavity. HPDE is a long chain/non stick plastic. resins can shrink over time (years) and what is stuck today can be popping itself loose later. the keyhole will give the...
  5. Surface Textures?

if it's interior. get some polyisocynaturate board and tear off the aluminum facing. it has a great lunar texture and mills on a cnc beautifully. i'm milling some right now for a project. you can take (non-shrink!) spackling and fill the texture slightly to your taste if you want to adjust...
  6. Surface Textures?

ralph lauren paint has a nice product called "suede" http://www.ralphlaurenpaint.com/FILE/1523/su101-desert-cactus.jpg
  7. What materials can I find at Home Depot to apply vinyl to?

flip these over and you have a light magnifying (cheap) transparent substrate http://www.homedepot.com/p/23-75-in-x-47-75-in-Clear-Prismatic-Styrene-Lighting-Panel-5-Pack-LP2448SCP-5/202653810
  8. Print decorative fine art with an eco-solvent printer

it's a mediocre set up. you won't be able to brand it as a giclee' because the ink and substrate won't be archival. most designers don't really care. they are just getting projects out. especially if it's for commercial (healthcare, energy, etc). for that stuff it's the cheaper the better...
  9. HDU Routed Signs - Question for a newbie

You are not ready to do this type of work until you get some routing software. ArtCam Express costs only $150 and can do a whole lot with it. I'd start with a free download and play with 2d profiling (cutting positive), Area Clearance (choosing various bits for cleaning negative space)...
  10. Rollover vs Rollsroller

i'd check chinese options as well. it's such a low tech item and many s101ers are having great results with the other chinese standard laminators. http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Mefu-Heat-Assist-Cold-Flatbed-Applicator_60375195325.html?spm=a2700.7724838.0.0.DCQNMD...
  11. The Great Seal of the United States (with the Eye in the Pyramid): aluminum and steel

with etching aluminum it's not so much about depth. there's the mill side (unetched) then the etched negative space, they reflect in completely different ways. plus when buffing them out the edges capture the black residue, you can leave that in lightly with nicely accents detail. as for...
  12. The Great Seal of the United States (with the Eye in the Pyramid): aluminum and steel

I'd either cold cast it or either acid etch aluminum for this. attached is a similar project i did way back by etching aluminum.
  13. Recomendatios Chinese Printer DX5 head

35 years on me. looking forward to a following 35 years that's a lot more adventurous. a year after the 2013 comment, i had a partnership with a 33,000 sq foot operation. then that "burn out' truly took hold. that closed down, tried to keep going. eventually burned all my bridges and went...
  14. Back Painting non-glare Panels

i'd go with bulldog for a clear primer. after conducting a huge controlled test with about eight clear primers, bulldog won. i don't remember what paint came in tops for adhesion, think it was a sherwin williams water based catalyzed epoxy paint. might be wrong on that one. on the table you...
  15. Advice on small paint booth compressor?

after going through two large "lowe's" style compressors, i bought a very old three cylinder 100 gal speedaire for $500. crazy quiet, tons of pressure. i'd also look into the craigslist option. they just don't make compressors in the sub- $1000 range very well.
  16. coldest winter ever!

Supposed to get down to 58F (14C) tonight. Had to turn on the A/C today! Houston winters are pretty mild.
  17. Oh man this is bad.

Either this kid is feeling the spirit, or crying because he's wearing an orange shirt with a phallus. https://www.facebook.com/wbls1075NYC/videos/10153323415398241/
  18. mimaki jv3 magenta empty over night?

also, if you ever pull a vacuum at the waste line when pulling ink manually, the carriage has to be moved momentarily to the left to break the tension of the ink flowing through. otherwise this can empty a cart' in fifteen minutes.
  19. Trim that leaves open paths

Is there any way to trim a very complex set of paths that leaves the trimmed edge open? Corel closes all the paths which is adding unnecessary linear inches to a CNC file that I'm working on. (...might have just figured it out. by combining all of the paths, then opening up a node connection...
  20. UV LED conversion

Why wouldn't one just buy it UV LED set up from the Chinese factory? There are many companies that sell the dx5 with the UV LED installed. Once I asked what the price would be without, it only took $1000 of the final price of the printer.
