Could be any number of things. Are you absolutely sure the leading edge is perfectly perpendicular to the edge of the material? Using the sheet cut function does not make a square cut.
Are you using all the pinch wheels? How old are the pinch wheels, especially the two outside ones. They are...
I tell them not to use clipping masks. Design it to size or use the correct program to get it to the needed size.
On that note: A client sent me a file that looked odd. Checked the layers and found that white blocks were used to cover the bits overhanging the artboard.
My students print everything they design. It's the best way to show file errors and excise "demons" from the files for teachable moments. As in why we don't use free fonts from the internet. Students learn valuable lessons when the inevitable; "Why won't it print" or "The preview is blank"...
I believe what the OP is looking for is called a scan setting. It stops the head from traveling the full width of the vinyl if nothing needs to be printed.
Mine is set up like that. Although its been so long I'd have to figure out where it is in the menu.
Intern from a local tech college. One local to me trains students on all types of wide format equipment. Students also learn cut vinyl and do various wrap projects. This semesters students are doing command car graphics for a local fire department.
I have the digital level from Sears. Bought it on sale years back for $15. Put it on a surface plate and checked it against a high dollar digital angle gauge. It read exactly the same. Shop owner was surprised.
Only time I use it is when I'm leveling equipment or things where I can't see...
Left tech school to work my first real job in a factory. Built all kinds of pollution control equipment, dryers, printing equipment etc... Did that for 26 years then my job was sent to China. While working the factory job I got involved with cut vinyl doing signs, also did striping on cars...
If the printer won't be unplugged more than a few hours I wouldn't be concerned. IIRC my SP540 self cleans every eight hours.
Make sure you immobilize the head with the special bracket before moving.
Not sure is this will help. I run a Royal Sovereign cold laminator in the shop and at school. Both are solid performers. Can't comment on the heat aspect as I have no experience. No issues with silvering, but I run both at speed 1.
Only thing I can think of is buy a new set of cables. Mine didn't some apart, but they were shot and caused print errors. Cables are dirt cheap, just make sure to buy extra fasteners. Took about 4 hours from tear down back to printing.
All my life I never cared enought to watch. Always had better things to do like drag race, ride motorcycles and four-wheelers, hunt, fish, you get the idea.
I agree with boxerbay and use a Swiffer duster. Crystal brand tack cloths work well too. Before lamination I run a cotton dust mop(Dust Mops & Commercial Dust Mops in Stock - ULINE) through the office/work area. Mop is sprayed with liquid mop compound first.
Amazing what it picks up.
Find your local monument shop they should have some recommendations. Ours uses stone blast since they work primarily on granite and marble. Works a treat on cedar, redwood, etc...
