Macs are not immune to this either. I am waiting on Adobe CS3 to get an Intel Mac. The switch to Intel was prbably the best thing Apple could do, but has made it problematic for my current software.

I don't like to use clip-art myself but for being a clip-art snob, I have a huge collection of it. If I ran a traditional sign shop I would use it, I use it for print work, there is no way I could compete with quick layouts if I had to hand draw something like that.....all my clipart is catalog...

Most decent fonts sets are around 150-250 bucks a set. It's not that the expensive ones are better for vinyl for printing but they are different. If I was going to sell a typeface would I want to stick it in a 20,000 typeface collection and make 1/2 a cent for all that hard work? Or 200...

There is nothing praiseworthy about mediocrity. How long does it take to kern a layout? 30 seconds....a minute at the most? Thats called service. The customer liking a poorly kerned sign is not a design principle or even a business principle, it's just an uninformed client and a poorly skilled...

I'm a former franchise employee and I learned a lot from that experience...especially how to shut up when the client had a really, really bad idea and the fine art of compromise....of course I forgot it all but I still try. Welcome!

I pretty much do it how Doug does it. It speeds up your designing, especially on complicated logos and layouts. Unless you know your specfic offset path measurement, it's usually hit and miss, adjusting strokes is faster an easier, then when the client picks a direction, you start making the...

I do what gnemmas does, but I do the equivalant in Illustrator. You have more control with adjusting the strokes. Contouoring (offset path) is sometimes hit and miss.

D.I.Y. seems to be creeping into this (and other) business more and more these days. One of my favorite magazines is based on it....(http://www.readymademag.com/) If you are going to do it, I would raise the bar a little bit and maybe double your budget and get a better start than the average...

It is pricey but thats when you charge it back to the client.
