Yes, like letterman said, as long as it's a "real" paint job you should be fine. There are matte laminates available that can probably get you close, but sometimes it's cool to have a contrast, high gloss lettering on satin/matte finish.

There are glitter vinyls. But I'd just go to the local craft supply, Michaels or Hobby Lobby and see what would work.

What do they want on it? Would a paint job and lettering (or panels) accomplish the same thing?

Yep, what Gino said. Don't waste your time. Any of the ways to solve the problem won't interest them because they cost $. So offer an alternative, an aluminum sign screwed to the side.
