Try unmasking the image. Arrange>Unmask. Delete the black rectangle. It may be necessary to do this several times. It is possible that this is a Photoshop file with vector data.
This issue goes back to at least Flexi 7. Sometimes, it happens. Sometimes, it doesn't. No rhyme or reason but frustrating. If I am working on complex gradients that I want to copy, I often step and repeat them rather than copy just to avoid this issue.
We used to use a ton of this stuff 15 years ago. Printing on adhesive-backed vinyl made it almost obsolete, but we still use it to mount the odd client-supplied prints, etc.
Used to get it from Charrette. It looks like they are no longer in business.
Any recommendations on a supplier for double-sided adhesive film? We had an old roll or two here for years that we use for odd jobs. I would take a 3'-4' roll.

May I ask what method(s) you use to ID fonts? I'm familiar with some of the font id websites, but sometimes the files are too small to work.

Could this be a stroke issue in Flexi? Have you tried selecting everything and Convert Stroke to Outlines? The stroke may be present in Flexi. You may not be able to see, select or edit it until it has been converted to outlines. Just a shot in the dark.
