  1. Are These Legit Orders - Or Is It A Scam?

They don't really care who they're stealing from as long as they can get the money. The way the scam works is that you agree to the order, they ask you to send it via a non-standard shipping company and asks you to pay them and tack that on to the order total. The freight company is bogus...
  2. Copyright question

Gino is absolutely right. If you don't have the permission of a copyright holder to reproduce their work, even for personal use, you open yourself up for legal trouble. It doesn't matter if you're showcasing your work in a portfolio or hanging a poster on the wall of your bedroom. You're...
  3. Backup System Needed - Please Educate Me

We have 50 Mb service right now, but we're supposed to be getting Google Fiber and 1 Gb service within the next couple of years. Woohoo! When you're backing up data to the cloud, it generally takes a LONG time for the initial upload, but after that it's much faster. Anywhere from 15 minutes to...
  4. Backup System Needed - Please Educate Me

100% with you on equipment getting fried. I don't usually go as far as to unplug everything, but I definitely turn off all essential equipment at night. We had a power surge during business hours the other day and a NIC card on a PC got fried even though everything was on APCs (Ethernet wasn't...
  5. Backup System Needed - Please Educate Me

You could also consider cloud based storage. If you're not interested in investing in a server, you can pay a nominal fee to use someone else's servers. I use Google Drive for my personal stuff and really like it, haven't even gotten closing to using all the free storage. I think it's $10 a...
  6. Right time to purchase new machine / inks

Wasn't there some kind of issue with the internal profiles on the HP latex printers superseding any custom profiles? I remember reading a thread on Signs 101, and I think it was the HP, but I could be mistaken.
  7. .060 Styrene - What to do with the waste?

We donate our scrap to the 501st Legion. I think the last batch they took they used to make stormtrooper costumes for kids at Kosair Children's Hospital.
  8. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

We used interns for a couple years and I can't disagree with this strongly enough. Out of the five or six interns we had, they were all pretty much worthless, just in varying degrees. Maybe your experience has been different, but ours was awful. We stopped using them a while ago. There was more...
  9. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

You can also post job offers on Indeed. There's a free level and you can also pay to have your ad run at the top.
  10. Thinking it might be time to hire my first employee, how to in this day and age?

It's also not a bad idea to start people on a probationary period. After three to six months, if they're going to work out, bump them up a buck or two. It should be pretty easy to weed out bad employees within three months.
  11. This is what I'm working on now, thoughts?

Depends on who you're marketing to. I could see that working with the "hip" crowd.
  12. Why we don't have political discussions at Signs 101 ... An allegorical tale

Fred, you are a learned man! Religion and politics have no place in the office or on the shop floor. Unfortunately, this is the way many Americans think. Which is why our voter turnout is some of the lowest in the world for industrialized nations. And also why we have so many clowns in office.
  13. Dye Sub Flags fading....

Even UV inks (non-laminated) are only about two to three years, depending on the ink and the outdoor conditions.
  14. This is what I'm working on now, thoughts?

When I glanced at the leaf logo all I could see was a shrimp and now I can't un-see it.
  15. anyone on 101 running a laser?

We're running an older Universal, but it still gets the work done! Sometimes I wish we had a larger processing area on it, but we still use it all day, every day, so I guess I can't complain.
  16. Ever happen to you...............??

Depending on the type of account, there could be an ATM deposit limit. It might not take an $8,000 deposit. Couldn't hurt to try it. If everything on the check is correct except for the "PAY TO" line, I don't think it would be considered fraudulent to try and deposit it. If you go this route...
  17. Ever happen to you...............??

Whaaaaaat? How big is this customer and how often do they buy from you? Assuming you've already politely requested that they remit payment immediately, you don't really have a whole lot of options. At least none that won't get you into trouble. Draft a final payment request, if they don't pay...
  18. Hand cut polystyrene

Yes. You can cut it with a razor knife easily enough. You can either make a couple passes or make one pass and break it, but if you don't go deep enough, you might end up with a rough(ish) edge. A quick pass with sandpaper cleans it right up though (or even just running your knife along the edge).
  19. website self-design page

You want the customer to be able to design a sign within the browser, then have that design either quoted or purchased directly from the website? You're probably not going to be able to find something like that anywhere on the web for free (I could be wrong though). The folks at signs.com most...
  20. Beer Label Design

If it doesn't have hops, it's not beer. It becomes something else, like malt liquor or mead. Even stouts and lambics and other styles that don't taste as hoppy contain hops. [Before anyone jumps my case, beer without hops does exist, it's just not called beer. It's called gruit.] As to the...
