Gold leaf is a bit tricky and engine turning adds to the fun. I use a piece of velvet on a padded dowel and spin by hand. Some do it with a drill but I'd be worried I'd burn thru it.

I too started as a sign painter. I love Gerber for text and vector work. It was designed for sign makers so has features that mimic what we would do with a brush, like the shade tool.
I used to use Kemp Permagild, but I think it isn't made anymore
When researching this recently I found good reviews on this stuff. It's what I will try on my next project that won't pay for the real stuff
