I can't open the iSign Latitudes Links either Hightop...I must assume it is because we are not subscribed members...

Dear iSign, are you one of my dearly departed college professors come back to haint me with your most excellent soliloquy in your post #55 in the forum afterlife...?
I am a psuedo newbie here and have not yet been bashed on this fine sign forum....I didn't dare quote your post #55 because of the length of it, but I sure enjoyed reading it and yeah ya got some good points just like my dearly beloved deceased college professors....
Perhaps I shoulda say dead poets instead....Doug, youse guys are very elusive with friendship here unless one has weathered the bumps and become a part of the clan...

Methinks Hightop will do very well on her banner when she goes to tweak it and finally lay some stickies....

Jimmy,
I'd like to think friendship here is not at all elusive, however free help or praise can be more elusive at times... needing to be earned... and yet one can earn either (or both) in a single post, while others never do... but i speak only for myself, or for my observations, while others choose their own elusiveness...

your friend, and pseudo dead poet!

Hightop,
first tips... I was taught that multiple lines of copy, or even separate messages on two lines, ought to "relate" more to each other, than to the signs border... and therefore, the Christmas Cantata copy looks too low to me.

Next... it is often found that to achieve the look of copy being centered top to bottom, that it should actually ride a tad high of center... but your entire right side layout looks too high to me.

third, even though you have 2 separate sections, I think that the lower line of each side would look nice if they were aligned. Which my other two suggestions might achieve.. but "almost" aligned will never look quite as nice (to me) as truly aligned!

by the way, that 2 color section will be tricky, because the yellow vinyl can't be simply stuck down on the blue, or it will be a dirty greeny yellow... so you have to knock out that copy & star from the blue, and then register the yellow in there, perhaps with a slightly outlined version so there is overlap... at which point you could even consider laying down the yellow first, and then applying the navy with the darker color overlapping the lighter, so no dirty yellow outline... but a tricky application for a first...

Or... switch the colors and have a yellow panel, with blue letters.. but since nobody wants a blue star, just have a blue outline maybe!

last tip... for as little as $7 each, you could and Jimmy try out a premium subscription for a month!

I didn't realize I was setting you guys up... forgot all about premium forums... but since it happened... here's my plug... go for it, best money you will ever spend in this trade... then mark up your next job $7 to cover it :)

Thank You Doug, and must agree on free help and praise concepts needing to be earned....I had a notion I needed explore...yeah, likely need to join premium forums to see if I been bashed there, heheee....just kiddin', I will surely reckon y'all have some signmaker goodies stored there....

Hightop, sorry for the temporary thread highjack.....
iSign gives exact specifics on text layout, especially with layering or "knock out" colors to prevent color "mudiness"....

BTW....the text for "Christ is come" as typed in upper & lower case is most correct as mentioned in an above post...
"Cantata" needs have an upper case "C" tho, as it is a "performance happening".....

I Know you will do it well Hightop....

Dave...
5 different fonts and an old english one?? I like the art on the left and the bar going across but you suprised me with these font choices.

hahahaha, and whoever made up the "2 font rule" needs shooting. Goes back to the days of Signwriting using your style and not "fonts". I jhave some artwork in my archive by John deaton using several fonts that I have kept for years and it would blow the socks off that theory. If the worst comes to the worst I would dig it up with JD's permission and show it here. I still don't understand when and where that theory was born???:peace!:

Oh noooo!
70s porno font on a church banner!!!!!
 Seriously?!? Wonder if any of the church folks would notice...hmm...might be a fun experiment! (Coming from the girl who "accidentally" took a Budweiser beach towl to church camp - rebel a heart! hahahaha!!)

Will have to review and respond to the other posts after work. Good stuff there! But couldn't let the "Porno Font" comment go unanswered. TOO FUNNY! Must mention, the more I learn, the more I find I have to learn. That's okay! Keep it coming! I'm enjoying myself! :clapping:

Another try

Hi again! Okay, here is another try based on the feedback. I hope I have heard all of the tips and incorporated them here. I would like to do other designs, but know there is very little time.

Now, somewhat in order:
1 - Changed from the Porno font! (ok, so now I know! haha!)
2 - I lowered the right side and lined up the top and bottom of both panels.
3 - Then, because I don't think I have the skills, yet (or the brass to learn on something this big!) I changed the background color to gray with the hopes that I will not need to cut out for the yellow star.
4 - Last and not least, sign up for the premium membership so I can look at more examples of how folks who know what they are doing do things!

JimmyG - thanks for the vote of confidence! I am hoping to be ready to "apply some stickies" soon!

Am I getting close yet? Thanks again folks! :thankyou:

! :thankyou:

It' really coming together with all the help and your own input. It's refreshing to see someone not just use someone else's ideas, but to learn from them and incorporate these new findings and ideas and make them become part of you.

As for joining the 'Premium' section to see folks who know what they're doing.... they all took off for the winter and flew to Columbia to visit the flower show. There are some amazing colors down there at that show. :thumb:

I think you have it Hightop, go for it...

the last drawing you show and your chosen font will be way more readable...grey background will work fine layering on dark blue vinyl text..
the only other thing I would do with the "yellow" star is use a white outline "separation" from the grey background and go with a darker yellow like chrome yellow or imitation gold vinyl, depending on what yellow colors that you have on hand....

I totally agree with Gino about "refreshing"...

The only thing that I wonder, now, is will Fred take an out of town 7 bucks company check to let me into the premium forums for a looksee....?
(maybe we could trade something instead?)

:)~

fix your spacing... text in white area too far right. Way too much padding.
Text in gray box too tight to edge.

Maybe move "christmas cantata" to the "Join us" line. Then make the 'Jesus is come" a little bigger. I think the gray box could be a pinch bigger. Think rule of thirds.

If you're selling a "Christmas Cantata" it should be the biggest thing on the banner, not the smallest. Tell 'em what it is and when to show up......
"Christ is Come" doesn't really need to be there either.

I think it looks lots better!

I assumed "Christ is Come" was the name of the church.
I still would tighten up all 3 lines at the left if I could... and I like the alignment , so then I'd adjust the right side... and to help with that, I find that "Join Us" while sounding friendly an all... is entirely unnecessary. Take it out, or even add "Join us in" to the top line.

Test a piece of yellow on gray. it still might get muddy. The idea above, to use darker yellow, AND leave a white space... I would do that !

AUTO FX,

The font is "Calligraphic".... needs to be kerned. The font wasn't the point though. The point was to get the message out as efficiently as possible. People driving by don't have a lot of time to read a banner so keep it short and sweet. IMHO anyway...
