  1. Rant Is it unreasonable to turn these projects down?

I do think everyone's opinion is different. That's why even when I disagree with someone's view on it... I don't get defensive, or say they're wrong, just try to state my views. I see it as I see religion. I hesitate to bring this up because It seems everyone on here is diehard religious...
  2. Rant Is it unreasonable to turn these projects down?

I don't agree you should follow every law just because it's a law. Some countries the law says a woman needs to fully cover their head, or that they're not allowed to drive... Heck, even in USA there's a law that allows 12 year Olds to get married. The rich rule the country and set the laws...
  3. Rant Is it unreasonable to turn these projects down?

We turn down copyright stuff all the time. We wouldn't turn down the job you listed... As I don't feel it'd fall into copyright, but I doubt they'd pay the shop minimum for the decal anyways. We once had a guy who imported vehicles from Japan into Canada. He sent us some labels and asked us to...
  4. Lead times

I think it all depends on the size of the shop, and how your employees skillets are laid out. we do a lot of wayfinding and huge projects where we go in and redesign a school or a hospital and produce hundreds of signs. It takes weeks for the layout and proofs and approvals, usually a day or...
  5. 3 d printing is anybody doing it and how are u making money

A few things most of you who want to get into 3D printing, but haven't yet and don't realize - 1 - it's slow. I'm talking some 6" prints of a statue take 16-24 hours on non draft quality. Then 12 hours in when employee x comes to see how awesome it is... He bumps the table, the extruder...
  6. Suggestions Large vinyl installation

Sometimes it's not even about skill. The idea of messing up is nerve racking... Wasting that big piece of vinyl over a tiny mistake and having to start over from scratch. You could do a hundred vinyl wraps a day and have the skill of a veteran pro, but never attempted something like this before...
  7. Suggestions Large vinyl installation

Use a vinyl with controltac. You can do it all in one piece pretty easily. I'd print it to match the light blue... then I'd use the top of the blue outline on the truck as a guide. Tack the top left... Tack the top right, make sure every 6-12" is aligned to the top of the blue border... Then...
  8. Idea for filtered area for CNC router or other non-clean equipment

Our old cnc operator would sweep all day and didn't tell anyone it was a problem. On e he retired and I learned cnc so I could train someone else... I saw what a problem it was. We had a dust collector that ran on compressed air. It did something like 75 cfm. We went out and bought a proper...
  9. Idea for filtered area for CNC router or other non-clean equipment

We have a trail of aluminum chips and wood dust from our CNC machine to our print room. Our CNC guy tracks it there whenever he walks around... So while this would help with airborn stuff, it might lead to more consolidated stuff on the floor that will get outside the clean room anyways. One...
  10. What equipment can you not live without? When to buy it

As a production guy... The rolls roller is the best. A lot of shops can't justify the cost for a "table", but until you use one.. you don't know how great it is. We do lots of sign application... It takes seconds to align a panel and put it on. It's perfect for huge 4x8s... it makes doing multi...
  11. Blade holder trick from SignCraft

huh? I thought this was general knowledge! When you buy a blade holder from Graphtec... they include a vial of grease with it. You're supposed to put a drop in every once in awhile. We had 6 blade holders... the guy before me never did any kind of maintenance on them.... after cleaning and...
  12. When Cricut grows up...

I'd be more worried about the guy down the street who bought a Latex printer/cutter combo for $11,000, than the 1000's of people who own cricuts. Cricuts are like Home inkjet printers...They're good for small, home stuff... not so much the stuff we do. You can't do anything on a 12x24" Cutting...
  13. Suggestions 18mm Retractable snap off cutter

How many emoyees do you have? Get them an Olfa. Carve their name into it... Each person is responsible for their own knife. I buy cheap $1-2 cutters for when I'm cutting down prints beyond their crop marks. I carry it in my pocket... I have like 15 of the same brand that no one else uses. I'm...
  14. Probably a dumb question but......

Reinstall illustrator. It'll fix file associations. I don't like opening with illustrator, some programs have special arguments... I know illustrator will show a preview of the file in the preview pane.when I manually associate it with illustrator that features always end uo broken for me...
  15. Winter is coming and so is Flexi 19...

Just when I canceled and went to onyx. Onyx just released 18.5... 19 is probably to one up then. Though onyx jumped from 11 to 18.. who knows why they jump so much. The font matching might be good. We'll have to see if it's useless or not!
  16. Discussion Which printer do I buy?

    Get an HP Latex R2000.
  17. Credit Card Rewards

Most cards have a once a year limit to their rewards. But yes... it's good to cycle cards in and out to get rewards. So long as you have decent credit, and a long history... It wont affect your score. It will lower it a bit - So if you plan on buying a house, or taking out a loan... as always...
  18. Suggestions Vinyl delaminated??

Probably too much Sun. Most vinyl isn't warrantied for flat surfaces because of this. That graphic has been baking in the sun for 4 years. Avery drops their 10 year warranty to 6 months on horizontal installs for this reason.
  19. No, your sign isn't done yet.

That's when you ring the guy up and tell him there's a storage fee. We held onto one guys 4x8 for 6 months. Not a cheap one either...one of the only real estate guys who use diamond grade for their signs. All paid for already, but still. I got tired of.always moving it around so we called them...
  20. Third Party Sublimation

Don't you need a huge heat press also? Dye sub is interesting. I wanted to get one for my home...but all the real estate the heat press would use turned me away from it.
