If you were planning on removing, I'd also use a removable adhesive vinyl, though they typically do not contour very well.

I am far from an expert in auto mirrors but I know from a broken mirror experience on my daughter's car that each part of the mirror is generally obtainable from your local dealer. That being said, if you try to get the mirror off and you break it, you can probably get just a new mirror glass...
