Track down a used GX unit. My GX 500 has three pinch rollers, but I've wanted to add additional rollers because I run 150' rolls through it. You can add pinch rollers to these units.
You may want to look into Summa as well.

Is your carriage lose? Slipping belt?
Encoder sensor could be going. I would have said strip, but you replaced that. Have you checked your encoder via service mode? If you are still getting an error after a new encoder strip, I would suggest the sensor.
